That’s a tough one. I would leave the cabinets alone. If you’re going to get new hardware it should be bold, black, chunky.

There is no harmony between the counter, cabinets, and flooring.

I quite like them. Maybe repeat the colors in the floor in a nice big piece of art of the wall?

I wouldn't stain your cabinets as it would be too dark. Your countertops and floor are already very dark. Maybe add a backsplash to spruce things up. I am not even sure what paint color I would use to match the countertops. If at all feasible I think the countertops are what needs to be changed.

Tiling a backsplash all the way around the windows could add pizzazz!

I agree with leaving cabinets alone and doing black hardware.

I would also consider going with a brighter white on the walls. Not too bright - but a warm white... maybe such as Benjamin Moore’s Ballet White. You can try a sample in your space and see if that shade is significantly lighter than what you have now. I like BM’s Natura Line.

With those couple of changes, I think you would have a very nice, cohesive kitchen. The hardware change alone might be enough, so do that first. I like the kitchen. it’s unique.

I like this little kitchen. I would put 2 or 3 chunky wood shelves on the wall over the dishwasher & use it functionally to put your dishes and glasses. If need be, by new and interesting shiny plates and glasses. That will add needed texture, dimension and storage to the space.

Counter and floor clash, therefore I would totally downplay the cabinets. Paint them the same colour as the wall. If you add a backsplash, it should also match the wall paint. An area rug in an accent colour may be a good idea to calm things down further.

Hi Pam — Is there any chance we could see a few more photos? One of the same shot but from further back (so we could see from floor to ceiling), one that includes your refrigerator (and any other cabinetry), and one with your back to the sink, so we could see into where this area integrates. Is there an island? Is your kitchen part of an open concept?

I agree with the others who said to start with dark, hefty hardware. Runners with color and a window curtain or Roman shade. Last, if needed, a new backsplash but take down the 4” one. I agree with lighter white paint as another inexpensive idea. I also like your chandelier!

I GREATLY APPRECIATE ALL the comments for this pain in my side 😂😂😂This is also part of the kitchen, I ordered a settee and another chair for this part so that we can pull it all up to the table for holidays! I hope my furniture comes soon ! I plan on putting a large artwork with a black frame to pull it all together!

Thank you, Pam, for the additional photos. You have lovely pieces, but you're right — they are definitely in competition with one another! Since your countertop and floor are non-negotiable, let’s look at changing the cabinet color to work with your fireplace surround. Personally, I love looking at an inexpensive mock up before making any drastic, expensive, or irreversible decisions. Can you purchase a handful of sheets of “creamy french white” posterboard, cut it to the size of your cabinet doors and drawers, and tape it up for several days? Please make certain to use painter’s tape, or something that won’t mar your woodwork. Perhaps focus on a small area to mock up, say the space between your refrigerator and stove (uppers and lowers), and “draw” on chunky black hardware with a marker. Also, tape strips of posterboard over your entire 6” backsplash, to see what it would look like if that were removed — I think you’ll be surprised what a dramatic change this one small step will make.

Another option would be to look at a creamy white for your uppers and a rich deep brown paint for your lower cabinets — also by changing out your mock up boards. If you can’t find deep brown posterboard, paint several pieces with the color you’re considering using for your lower cabinetry.

Do you have a budget in mind? How much are you considering investing in this project? If you do decide to paint your cabinets, would this be a DIY or would you hire out this project? Would you consider enclosing your soffit space? What about adding a few open shelves between your cabinets and the corner to the left of your window, and adding a large piece of artwork to the right of the window, over the dishwasher. And yes, I agree with others who have posted — a pretty noncompeting full height back splash would help tie everything together.

Also — yes to a Roman shade! Start it at the ceiling, above the top of the window over your sink — perhaps in a rough linen, also in creamy white, with two strips of fabric running vertically that pick up the pretty soft muted colors in the rug under your table.

If you do decide to go with a creamy white for your cabinets, please consider painting your crown molding, window framing, and fireplace surround the same shade.

personally, considering you may way to redo the kitchen at some point, I would change the handles and find a carpet in front of the kitchen to make the floor less visible next to the cabinets and then let it there.
