Old phal. with very long stem

what do I do with with an old Phal. that has a long stem? Plant is very healthy, but over the years as it grew the bottom leaves have dropped..now it has a stem about 5" long before the leaves start! I'm afraid to build up moss around the stem, won't it rot?

It should grow roots where the leaves are and when there are enough you could trim the lower portion if there are no roots in that part. You can certainly keep whatever media your are using around the stem, it would encourage root growth further up the the stem/rhizome.
