Here are a couple of pictures. In my experience, deer will eat the whole flower. In these examp[les, petals are disappearing.

Every time I scroll past this heading I get a brief mental image of my supper before I remember what the real topic is.

Most likely finches are going after the seed. They love to pull the petals off my zinnias.
