Leggy geraniums not looking good.

I bought " zonal" hybrid geraniums in May that looked very good until now. Now they look leggy with few buds per cluster. A lot of green growth with few flowers. I fertilized, but did no good. I Have heard of people cutting them back to over winter and having healthy plants come spring. Could I do that now and cut them back maybe about a 1/3 and have a nice plant with more flowers in a few weeks?
