Well, I’ve never grown them but, the leaves remind me of the gloriosa lily. Just a guess though.

I agree with Gloriosa lily. I love the flowers but don't grow it because the plant is very toxic if eaten and I have a dog who loves to chew on my plants.

Yep, gloriosa lily. It grows from tiny little rhizomes, and it won't bloom until it's about 3 years old or so. It likes shade and neglect.

y’know, I had a sneakin’ suspicion that’s what it was and now I remember that I got a bit of rhizomes from my GW friend KaraLynn at one of Silvia’s swaps. I bet that was 7 or 8 years ago.....just kickin’ myself right now for not letting it grow!

I agree - it looks very much like Gloriosa lily to me as well. Lovely flowers, and toxic if ingested, as stated above.

Shade? My Gloriosa Lilies of 10 years+ are planted against a west facing wall, near the south corner. Most of them lunge southward toward the sun and get stringy (5 ft, or 2 ft and yellowish). Maybe they DO prefer shade. The ones in your photo look very healthy - how much sun/shade do they get?

This plant is in a really shady spot under the sweet almond tree that is also covered with passion vines. If there’s any sun getting through, it would be late afternoon as it begins to set.

Since I took the photo, this vine has grown about 2’. Maybe it wants more sun......
