So Rhamnus is Buckthorn? And also non-native for my area? I've read can sometimes be invasive? Can the berries be eaten by humans?

Yes, yes, yes and no.

There is a native Rhamnus in NY (alnifolia), but this looks to be the much more common (and non-native) cathartica.

That species epithet gives you a good idea what happens when you eat the berries: it produces a dramatically "cathartic" or purging effect on your gastrointestinal system.
