I water all over the pot surface to make sure all the soil mass is wet. This is especially important for free draining mixes like 511 and gritty. You can easily end up with pockets of dry soil especially under and around the trunk. Roots are also dense around the trunk slowing the flow of water. A good method is to water using a slow gentle spray and then come back in 10-20 minutes and do it again.

I water/fertilize around the outer area of the pot. I also rase my trees so that I have cone of soil to keep water away from the trunk.

Mist and shower the foliage with gardena nozzle after work. Than water pot at least once a day until the top is wet and soil is a dark chocolate color. Have a mixing valve on my garden tap for 90F water. Prevents shock. Using a patio umbrella for shade and don't get as much rain water.
