Air layering Sumo seedling

Here's a Sumo/Dekopon grown from a seed I found last year, planted in a 2 gallon pot. I'd eventually like to air layer the branch on the very left, however the growth is still fairly new/green.

For those of you who have experience air layering citrus, should I wait till the wood becomes more lignified before attempting to air layer this branch? I noticed the wood is starting to change colors down at the base, where it meets the main stem.
