Special Japanese Maple suggestion

Hello all from zone 7b,

I am hoping you could suggest a maple for me. My husband and I had a daughter three months ago and we would love to purchase/plant a Japanese Maple to commemorate her birth and have it be “her” tree that she grows up with.

The considerations we have are that it needs to be fairly small (thinking top height to be around 12 feet and not too wide) and something special in terms of foliage and fall color. It will get mostly shade with some speckling of sunlight but not any harsh sun.

The space it will be sighted is in the bed right in front of our front porch so we don’t want it going over the roof.

Another large part of this question is also what websites are your favorite to order Japanese Maples from? Due to the current situation and being in a huge hotspot for the virus I am not able to safely go to brick and mortar stores to purchase the maple.

Excited to hear what your suggestions are!

P. S. We already have a Coral Bark, Orange Dream and two other unknown maples as well.

Highly recommend Davidsans Japanese Maples for mail order. I have never had a tree packed as well as they did, and the quality of the tree I bought is top notch. I can’t opine on a cultivar for you but they have hundreds of varieties. They also have a selection tool where you can plug in your wants and it will suggest varieties. I’m sure others will chime in with suggestions.

I am not at home so can’t share a current picture but here is a shot from before we bought our house years ago. The area is to the left of the picture looking at the front of house. So in front of the railing of the porch. The area is about 15 feet wide.

I would go with a Fireglow with a single trunk or at least a higher split. I just looked at two myself and purchased one of them. Nothing wrong with the other one, just personal preference. The place does have a website but you really need to call them as it is lacking. The owner is David Freed at Garden Design Nursery, https://www.gardendesignnursery.com/ I highly recommend him. The one I'm speaking of is a 15 gallon one but he also has lots of small ones also. Tell him David Terrell asked you to call him.

Another consideration is a Okukuji Nishski, while the fall color is rather bland (imo) it makes up for it in the spring and throughout the summer with the variegated leaves. I also planted one of these in a single trunk. The height will be somewhere under what you have specified, maybe 8 ft or so. https://www.gardendesignnursery.com/product/okukuji-nishiki/
