what’s wrong with my rhododendron?

This is my recently planted PJM rhododendron elite. Planted south facing (full sun). Been doing very well since May but recently noticed this discolouration at the bottom. Weather area is 5b.

That might be too much sun. I’m in 5b also and they do much better in dappled sunlight, not direct.

Any of the PJM's will tolerate full sun. In fact, they prefer it.

The older leaves on any broadeaved evergreen shrub are discarded as they outlive their usefulness. And they often become mottled or yellow before they do so. As long as it only affects the older, lower foliage, I wouldn't be too worried.
