Master Suite Layout

Help on layout of "master suite",

Below is an estimate (give or take the closets, etc.). I would like to combine the master bedroom and bedroom together to create a master suite. Goal is to completely redo the bathroom to make it much larger. I would like the bathroom to include a large shower, soaking tub, and large vanity (storage). The bedroom will also have a walk in closet. Remaining master will need enough room for a king sized bed.

I am having issues figuring out the layout, especially with the current bathroom being so narrow.

Any suggestions?

Is anyone else in the house regularly using the 2nd bathroom? If not, the most straightforward the thing to do my be to turn the 2nd bath into a powder room and claim the extra space for the master bath.

If you want to spend a lot more money, move the master bath to the top corner of the corner bedroom. Let the existing master bath become your closet. Move the closet in the spare bedroom next to the new master bath-- this will give you a lot more room in the spare bedroom.

Thank you Jennifer! I was thinking of moving the bathroom completely (pretty much to the location you were saying) but was trying to figure out a more cost effective way to make the bathroom bigger.

You would lose serious property value by taking the home down to a 1.5 bath. I would blow out the linen closet and both closets back to the wal lthats separating the two closets back to back. Gaining those 2' will give you room in the bedroom for a king bed. That leaves you the rest of the space for your ensuite and closet. Although cost effective to not move the plumbing to gain everything you want its got to be done. I places the closet where the current bathroom is then split the vanitites leaving room for a stand alone tub. By taking the entrance to the bedroom out to the edge of hall and locating the bathroom door on the wall where the closets once were it will leave you room for a sizable shower and a private water closet with pocket door for privacy.

Thank you Design Interior South! The picture is quite helpful. I was toying with this idea too, but was having a hard time picturing it.

You think the shower where the linen closet was? Tub between the vanities?

2 bedrooms to be served with a 1/2 bath is not ever going to work . So the plan is to take a 3 bedroom house and turn it into a 2 BR house with a bath and 1/2 and somehow you think this will be a good idea ???

Patricia- this is just one floor of the home. The house in total is 5 bedrooms 3.5 baths. With a massive open room on another floor that can also have another room added to that level of the house.

Right now, the full other bath on this floor will dm stay there. The two bedrooms will be combined. This still will leave the house as 4 bedroom 3.5 baths.

Claire I did this very quickly as a quick reference to the possible layout. I think to make the rooms flow taking the bedroom door as I show it is necessary to get the bedroom portion large enough for the king bed you want. There are other configurations possible. My goal was that you don't lost the bathroom because you still have another bedroom downstairs that if used as a bedroom will need a full bath to use. They certainly wouldnt be going into the master bath to use it. Although it is feasible to make the master bath and the secondary bath one large bathroom with two entrances do you want to share that bathroom with guests and the other room? Keep property value in mind.

I am planning on keeping the full bath with “public” entrance. The house has another floor with an additional 2 bedrooms and bathrooms.

These are just approximations. It’s a freebie design studio, but it’s helping “see” the vision.

So I fiddled around with a floor planner and this is what I came up with. If feels like a lot of wasted space to me, though I suppose some might call it 'airy'. And I'm not happy with the closet situation.

Sorry mine isn’t done fancy. I’ll have to look for that design program.

Halberta & Jennifer - I’ll have to play with those layouts. Thanks!

So I fiddled some more, making the assumption that converting a 1st floor extra bedroom into an office would mean that a 2nd full bath on the first floor would be unnecessary. Of course that assumption may totally not work for you. But I think it gives you better flow. Have a look:
