Causes if margin narrowing?

I have to ask this question now, because if I try to sleep on it I'll forget
What are the causes of margin narrowing?
Take a cylindrical leaved Sans, for example. Sometimes the leaves look like they have been pinched or squeezed on a portion.
I'll get a picture of what is probably S. 'Warshiik' that looks like it's doing this, when it's light out It's quite nearly 3am here. Good morning and good night.

I have some like that too. I don't know for sure but I thought it was from growth during a period of dryness, then it gets watered and the new growth is plumper.

Here are some leaves from some plants doing this. I think with the 'Ed Eby' it might have been light exposure affecting it's growth. Oops. Got 2 pics of one, and I can't get it deleted from this phone.

This margin narrowing does not bother me, I am just curious. I have seen some photos where the affect can leave plants like 'Boncel' looking a little strange.
