managing woodland groundcovers

last modified: 6 years ago

I have a woodland area where I have removed the worst vines from trees and have brought what I thought were the worst weeds under some control. I've planted more trees and shrubs. For the groundcover I've been planting clumping and running ferns and solomon seal and left the impatiens capensis (jewelweed) and white wood aster, which are abundant. But I'm concerned to suddenly see ivy and creeping charlie exploding. I had hoped ferns would hold their own, but will they? How meticulous do I have to be about getting rid of these ivies? Help me choose which battles to fight. Thank you for your thoughts.
