2' 3" hallway is "weirdly narrow". But if you want a runner, you should probably have a gap of 2-3" on either side. And that means 1'9" to 1'11" wide.

Best way to test before you buy is to put down so painters tape (or brown paper cut to width if you have it) where the runner would be. Then stand back and see if the width feels right.
