Dining room table dilemma

Hello Houzzers! My husband and I just purchased and moved in to a new build house and I will need lots of help with the various rooms over time. The first room I want to tackle is the bare dining room. Our dining table from our previous home was too big for our new space so we sold it. I am really confused as to what color of table I should buy. We have a lot of different wood tones in our new kitchen; Alder and Walnut cabinets and multi-colored wood floors. Also, our new dining area is very small; 10 x 11. I think I want a 48" table but I'm also considering one that can extend for when we have family gatherings. Would the Pottery Barn Hart table in black olive work in this space? https://www.potterybarn.com/products/hart-dining-table/?catalogId=84&sku=3926839&cm_ven=PLA&cm_cat=Google&cm_pla=Furniture%20%3E%20Dining%20Tables&cm_ite=3926839&gclid=CjwKCAjw9vn4BRBaEiwAh0muDAVoWq0eBLai6j5Sm73NeUqnX-de9qmzXLgzpI3gKkCD6JoSs49ziBoCwBYQAvD_BwE

The cream cabinet is very temporary and will eventually be replaced as well as the barstools. Any and all advice on barstools would be greatly appreciated. Also, please ignore decor on cabinet; still unpacking boxes and just setting stuff until it can find a home.

Thank you all so much in advance.

I love this! Thank you! Where would I find those dining room chairs? I was actually just looking at very similar bar stools.

    Thank you very much!

I have one more question about rug size. Should I buy a round rug or would a rectangular rug work in this space?

My comment isnt posting. Trying again. 8' round is what you will fit. that will leave 2' to pull chairs out onto. That is pushing the limits. Keep in mind in a kitchen a rug isnt absolutely necessary too.

Thank you, I appreciate all of your help! My thought was a lighter rug might help break up all of the grey wood tones.

Thank you Maureen! Great inspiration! I really like those wicker barstools!

I have wicker stools in my kitchen and they bring a lot of warmth and a bit different.

Maureen, are they comfortable to sit in?

More comfy than wood but less than a padded seat would be. If you have cats you may run into issues, as one of ours is always trying to scratch them.

Thanks for the reply Maureen! After looking at the price of the wicker stools I ruled them out as we have a cat that has shredded too much furniture already.

I’m so glad I mentioned a cat. See my chair damage.

Just an FYI to help. We bought our set of 4 chairs and table second hand for $600 and it was like new. Each chair retails for $300 and thought Facebook’s Marketplace may be of interest to you. Below are random examples in my vicinity to show how great prices are and items change all the time

Wow, your kitty did some damage! Our kitty is in the dog house because he jumped up on top of the kitchen cabinets and put scratches in our brand cabinets. That is really good to know about shopping for used. I'll check out what is around locally. I found gorgeous wicker barstools in Wayfair but they were $500 per chair....way over my budget.

I ordered these barstools today and now second guessing what I should do for dining table. Would a light cream colored table work?

Wondering if table feels a bit farmhouse, so chairs will have a big influence in making it more Contemporary. Do you have chairs already?

Here is a more modern style in white. May not be large enough, but wanted to give a visual.

Could also look for a table in same wood tone as bar stools and use black chairs. May work better with your kitchen and new stools

    IKEA chair

Thanks so much Maureen. I love the farmhouse look and tend to gravitate towards it but realize it doesn't really suit the house. I don't have chairs yet. I did find this Kathy Kuo table. If I got this table, then would you do a lighter chair?

Love this table with your decor. So many styles would suit and agree to go lighter but not necessarily white. Chose these as they would work with your bar stools

I love those metal chairs! I also love the rug! Thank you!

    Enjoy your new home.

Thank you Maureen! I really appreciate all of your advice!

My barstools arrived and the wood is a much redder color than I expected. Would you return and find another chair? Go with a leather product?

  • PRO

I don't mind the color but they really don't show up against the island color. There is no contrast.

Would you go with a black chair or maybe white? Or pull in more of the grey tones?

So I learned a valuable lesson and should read return policies before assembling furniture. Because I assembled the. barstools I can't return them. So thinking I should pull in the warmer red color in the dining room chairs. Am I on the right track?

Good Evening everyone. Three months after ordering a new dining table it finally arrived! I like it even though it is a much different color than I expected. We have been slowly updating our living room and I'm wondering if upholstered parsons chairs would work with our dining table. If so, what color would you do? I would greatly appreciate any and all comments or ideas. Thanks so much!

Hi all! Hoping for advice on chairs I ordered. We have been making do with the black chairs in the photo while the slipcovered upholstered chairs purchased were on backorder. The slipcovered chairs arrived last night and now I'm not sure if I like them. I constantly suffer from buyers remorse and second guess myself. I know the black chairs are too "country" but I think I like them better than the cream chairs. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated!

Is it better to start a new post to receive more comments? I'm not sure of the etiquette here.

prob post a new one since the date shows up as last year w/a diff issue. people won't know you're still working on other things

BTW, look at woven rattan or Loom chairs. they'd be pretty in your space (and maybe a light too)

Thank you so much Beth! Those are all gorgeous! Any idea where the chairs in the first photo are from?

I would love a beautiful light above our table. The table doesn't sit squarely under the 4 canned lights we have because room so small and we pushed table closer to the wall. Would a light still be doable? Would it have to swag?

    last modified: 5 years ago

no, no swag. you could pony off one of the canned lights (remove that middle one if you like) and place it directly over the table. (if you don't want to patch a hole, then leave it. They can make a new hole and fish the line from that closest can)

they make fixtures or adapters for sloped ceilings. just read the specs.

as for the chairs, they're all over the place. google Loom dining chairs. or woven rope chairs

Thank you so much again Beth. We will definitely look into getting wiring for a light fixture over the table.

I googled the Loom chairs. They are so lovely but so far what I'm seeing is out of my budget. I'll keep searching though.

Hi JB! I don’t have chairs or lighting advice but I do have a question! Your sofa is so pretty, would you mind sharing where you got it?

Thank you paintedpeggies! It is actually a fairly inexpensive sofa from Ashley Furniture. I love the look of it and it is pretty comfy. We are in the process of replacing it with a sofa with a chaise that has more durable fabric to hold up to our large dog and ninja cat.

saw your cat photo! he's very mischievous looking. (I have a few like that)

you need some sisal scratching posts and a tall cat tree somewhere! I have about 4 of them and they never touch any of my furniture.

get one like this and they aren't too ugly. (I actually have this one

Yes, he is so naughty! Those cat trees are pretty attractive. We have tried a few different cat trees that he has refused to touch. We did finally buy a scratchy ramp that he now uses every day. Unfortunately he also is still using the couch. Going to try nail caps.

Thank you so much for the advice! Greatly appreciated.

lol. try the new scratcher posts and put catnip on them (does he react to the catnip? I have one that doesn't) put the post next to his sofa spot. w/the nip. slowly move it to where you want it.

in the interim, cover his current sofa spot w/a throw, or the sticky tape until he tires of it.

We will try this! Definitely don't want him ruining the new sofa when it finally arrives. Thank you so much!
