wall prep for paint, maybe grass cloth

This is a sad story about my small foyer/entryway of my 96 year old house. I stripped off the wallpaper a couple of years ago and never got around to washing off the old adhesive. DH decided to hire the worst painter in history (without my knowledge) who slapped on latex paint without any wall prep, over the old surface with dried up adhesive. Two years later the newish paint is flaking off. I took it upon myself to start scrapping off the loose outer layer. Unfortunately in many spots it went down to an original surface of paint on real plaster. Now I’ve got a gigantic mess and I need suggestions on what to do.

My plan was to use grass cloth in this space. It’s only 6’x6’ with 10’ height. There are fours doors in this space so there is really not a lot of wall surface. Can some one guide me on the steps I need to take to either prep for grasscloth or paint?

I had a similar issue and used textured paper that had a grass cloth pattern, meant to be painted over. It’s great in a hall especially as it can be touched up vs grass cloth getting permanently damaged. Big cost saving (purchased at Home Depot) and not limited to color choices.

When we bought the house 35 yrs ago all the oak trim was pickled a pinkish grey color. We hired college students to strip it all off! We are only the third owners of this beauty!

Do you know which paint layers contain lead? That would affect your preparation. Covering it all up with an anaglypta type paper is a good idea.

I think anaglypta is a great idea and comes in some really cool designs too I have even done 2 different ones to create a wainscoting look. I used the plain paintable liner above and then the anyglypta below

Before reapply paper make sure you scape any of the crackled or flaking paint off. Lightly sand( wear an appropriate mask) speckle the areas that are recessed as they will “ tell” when reappeared. Lightly sand those areas. I would prime with an oil based primer to seal any of the remaining glue/ paint left. You can now paper.
