What varieties are they?

Where are you located; city, Dept. of Ag. zone, etc.?

Soil type, sunlight level, water management insect and disease pressure, etc.?

What size were the roses when first planted? Bare root of potted, and own root or grafted?

Since they had fragrance originally, I suspect it's an environmental/care issue. But yes, I doubt we can diagnose your care issue remotely...maybe someone can make suggestions given more information.

I am not sure of varities( I dont remember all the names) they are mostly David Austin roses.

I am located in chicago, IL .they were around 12 inch potted.

they are potted in ground with daily watering. bees are quite common and i am not sure of disease pressure. they get full sunlight throughout the day atleast from sunrise till 5pm .

some i remember names of are savanna, jude the obscure,Charles darwin,DARCEY BUSSELL,lady Emma hamilton.

Well, as a general note, unless the plant is aquatic, nothing needs to be watered every day, though I doubt that is the fragrance issue. Deep watering once a week is the more accepted methodology.

And they don't need to be fed every month either. Did you mean that they are in pots, in the ground? How big are the pots?

In my experience, fragrance is MUCH more noticeable when it is humid. Do you notice any fragrance when you bring the blooms inside?

they are currently in ground when I bought them they were potted in around 12-16" or so inch pots.

and no I dont notice fragrance when I bring indoors either.

dbarron, in regards to your comment of being suspecting of environmental/care originally they were only for the first year i bought from nursery.

fragrance is ephemeral ....

try different times of the day .... just opened.. older blooms ... no wind ... not in hot dry sun ... etc ... [you will note on very old flowers.. they start to smell like they are rotting .. at which point.. may as well deadhead them...]

fragrance does not go away from a plant... its genetic ... and i highly doubt its cultural ...

which only leaves me with when you try to smell them ...

they are probably grafted roses.. i suppose they could have died.. and all you have left is unimpressive root stock ... but i think you would notice the flowers are no longer the same ...

And you can skip the Epsom salts. It will do absolutely nothing to improve or intensify scent. Won't do anything else for your plants either.......unless you have a magnesium deficiency, which is typically rather rare.

Where do nurseries come up with these harebrained ideas anyway??
