Too much white??

Doing a bathroom remodel. We initially planned on doing matte white 2” hexagon floors with either dark grey or charcoal grout, and a 4’ wainscot of 3”x12” white subway tile that wraps the entire bathroom, including the shower, with white grout. the rest of the walls are currently white as well. White tub, white toilet. Our pops of color are our vanity which is a “pine mist” color (light green) with gold trim and gold legs. We plan to do gold faucets, and other gold trim as well (towel bars, etc.)

My question is, is this too much white? Should we paint the walls a different color? If so what color?

feeling lost in a sea of decisions.

thanks for any input!

Perhaps some wooden shelves and a nice leafy plant added

I personally like white bathrooms as long as there is some relief (such as mirror frames, faucets, cabinet hardware, shelving, lighting fixtures).

What a great way to wake up! Thanks everyone for your thoughts and encouragement. Some great inspo pics there to consider. I forgot that we are adding plants for sure, and some artwork will totally break it up too. Thanks again!

Also, towels, rugs, or a bath mat will break up the white on the floor and walls.

Post a picture when you are done. Sounds lovely!

    Will do!

All the white is fine. I wonder about all the gold.

sounds very fresh and airy feeling.

@loobab yeah We are re-thinking all the gold. we are doing a matte black sink faucet, Medicine cabinet will be a recessed thin framed Matte black as well. brizo luxe gold shower Faucet, and brizo luxe gold tub filler. I think our shower door handle will be black as well, as we Probably won’t be able to match the faucet to it In the same gold. Is that weird? Black door handle and gold shower faucet? Towel bar, hooks, rings are undecided at the moment.

Can you put up a photo of everything you are planning and then you can get some feedback from Houzzers on weird or wonderful.

For me, gold is jewelry- too much is well, too much.

For others, more is more better.

    It's your house.

Here is a board of things we plan to put in there

Here is our current bathroom, the walls have been painted white since these were taken but everything else is the same

    Mark B-

You know what, I love, love your current bathroom!

If it were mine, I would just replace the current furniture knobs with green glass ones and remove the shutters and replace the light fixture over the mirror and call it a day.

I've also seen adventurous homeowners wallpaper those bathrooms above the tile with wild and crazy prints that coordinate with the colors of the tiles, so in that way they are modernizing the bathroom but still maintaining and respecting the original style.

Loobab I don’t mind it, but I don’t love it. The tiles have lots of cracks in them, especially in the floor and all the throughout the shower. Our shower pan is leaking, so we have to break up the tile to get to the leak...that’s what prompted the renovation in the first place.

Too much white is a problem these days.

    Joseph, meaning white is trendy?

White is not trendy. It is classic and timeless. I think your choices are lovely!

Hi mark. I think you are going in the right direction. From what I can tell, you want a modern, timeless feel. I would reconsider the gold. My feeling is it will be trendy. A more brassy gold was popular in the 80’s. What do you think of silver and gold?

Cdr - thanks. I do want modern timeless. Do you mean a mix of silver and gold? That could be kind of cool. I hear you on the all gold everything. The brizo gold parts we are going with are more of a matte champagne-beigey gold, so not as “in your face” yellow or shiny. Almost a brushed nickel vibe but slightly more gold. But I do understand what you’re saying. We have chrome now and it’s fine. Just feel like it doesn’t have a lot of personality? Our sink faucet will be matte black, matte black medicine cabinet, and will probably switch to a different light fixture than the one I posted above, perhaps black as well? So I guess it will be a mixture of blacks and golds. The handle pulls on the vanity are gold, as well as the legs, other than that and the gold tub faucet and shower faucet we will probably stay away form more gold than that.

Hi Mark.....so sorry.....what I meant was silver and black.

The softer muted gold is a trend right now, that I feel will fade.....maybe you are okay with that.

Also, I don't know enough about the rest of your house.

How does this bathroom fit in with overall plans of your home?

Is this bathroom associated with a bedroom?

How many other bathrooms are in the house?

What elements are already purchased or you cannot change?

Do you really need the tub?

With the matte white floor tile, choose the finish carefully. The previous owners installed matte white hex tiles in our hall bathroom and it’s harder to keep clean..

I think all white is perfect for bathroom. If you feel bored you can add some flower or just painting.

Cdr this is the only bathroom we have. It’s in between both bedrooms. The vanity pictured above is already purchased, along with the faucets. Not that they can’t be returned, but they will probably stay. We do need the tub as we have a 1 year old and probably another kid soon.

Okay.....then, your gold and black work.

Don't know if you'd spend the $, but have you considered creating a tub/shower and then you'd have extra space.......

could move the toilet where shower is and have larger shower or have a longer vanity. Would be nice to have 2 sinks in there.

I see it is an older home, so I know that may not be easy,

We thought about it but with the window layout it wouldn’t work. The window overlaps the tub by 6 or so inches, so we wouldnt be able to put a glass shower wall up against it.

Cdr what are your thoughts on grout color? Dark for the floor (pewter or charcoal?), white on the walls (bright white, some other variant of white, or more of a super light grey?

  • PRO

If you are using a dark grout for the floor, I'd use a grout to match the tile for the walls. Too busy otherwise.

  • PRO

There is not a lot of floor space.....what I think would look really nice is to use black tile on the floor and white on the walls.

Stainless steel fixtures and hardware will stand the test of time and would be as classic as all your white.

Totally agree about adding a plant. Consider heart leafed philodendron in an attractive container -- a kind of art appropriate to a humid space

While art sounds great, in my admittedly limited experience, a framed picture does not usually withstand the moisture of a bath very well.

If you want art, at least consider art that can withstand the heat and humidity of a daily shower or multiple daily showers.

Dang black would be cool on the floor. Might have to rethink it!

And when you say grout to match the tiles, do you mean white grout since we are doing white tiles? Or do you mean to match the grouts?

  • PRO

Yes,......see the one I posted above. That would make a statement and would not date itself.

Then, I'd use touches of black through the rest of your home.

  • PRO

I meant that the white grout should match the white tile.
