My seedlings 2020 - part 1

So I am going to try to make two posts of my seedlings again like last year. Sorry the posts are long, I have over 65 blooming seedlings this year, already composted a few, and if you find time to look I'd really appreciate if you mention what you like and don't like to help me cull further. I do really like all of them and find something good in each one, haha. I was supposed to really cut back on crosses this year, yeah right, it's so addictive. And I am completely out of room, I don't even have room for this year seedlings, which will have to stay in pots, probably will not overwinter..

Anyway, I will number them like last year again

1 - was trying to cross lates, Kayleigh Cobb x Stranger in a strange land (SIASL) #1

good garden plant I think, it sometimes looks darker, and when hot it becomes bitone, used to double scape all the time but not this year

2 - sibling, KCxSIASL #2, this one is quite pretty I think but can never take a good pic, also used to double scape all the time but not this year

3 - Man of Sorrows x Red Friday #1 - tall & bigger flower but stops recurving after a few flowers, I am using it as a bridge plant, forgot stats, it has an ok number of buds

4 - Eyes on the Prize x Elegant Candy - opens at night, good bud count, instant rebloom, I just want to make the petals lighter

5 - now several Blood Sweat & Tears x Red Friday, they are all tall, and UF-ish

BSAT x RF #1, the darkest and best bud count & branching

6 - BSAT x RF #2 - like it when it recurves like that, which is not always, I don't know what to do to make it better but preserve the big light center

7 - BSAT x RF #3 - doesn't always have sepals like that, but I decided to post this look, when it has normal looking sepals it looks pretty, I think ))

8 - BSAT x RF #4 - I was thinking about getting rid of this one but I still like it quite a bit, there's another one but it didn't bloom this year

9 - now two Chance Encounter sdlgs, CExRF #3, one of my oldest, tall, bigger flower, there's something I like about it

10 - CExRF #6, this was my pot experiment, now in the ground, we both really like this one, the pink color which is hard to capture, and it's fragrant, 5.5 inch flowers which seem bigger to me, maybe I'm not measuring right, decent bud count, this stays ))

11 - another try for lates out of SIASL, and these next two are late, this is the latest to bloom every year that's why it's still here

12 - sibling which I like the colors of better

13 - another late out of Tahlequah Flame, which I keep and keep every year because I like that brown color but it's almost always splotchy, I don't know what to use to clarify it but keep the color

14 - more Chance Encounter sdlgs, CExU #2 (U is Undercurrent), I like this one, it's bigger bloom than Chance Encounter, opens better, and is more lavender than Chance Encounter, hard to photograph so I am using an afternoon pic

15 - CE x U #3 - my only light one, I am trying to make it whiter but 2 seedlings that survived and looked like blooming size did not bloom this year, ah I was so looking forward to them

I'll post more in comments, if Houzz allows ))

16 - Utopia or Oblivion seedlings, I like the midribs on this one, grows in shade..

    17
    - sibling, well it's labeled Utopia seedling but I doubt that, anyway
it's a good plant, nice sturdy scapes, instant rebloom on almost all fans,
but.. it's always splotchy, I am tired of waiting, I will let it finish
and good-bye. It was nice the first year it bloomed though but never
    since

18 - my bud queen this year, Last to the Buffet Line x Eyes on the Prize which I call Last x EOTP

19 - two Intelligent Design x Wild Horses seedlings, IDxWH #1, instant rebloom last year and this year

    20 - IDxWH #2,

had IR last year but not this year, multiplied too well I'd say..

21 - Lavender Heartthrob x Leaving Me Breathless (LHxLMB), recurved last year but not this year, I prefer recurved look

22 - sibling, LHxLMB, which was great its first year but not quite now, I still very much like it, nice purple color & edge

23 - Red Friday x Sea Dragon, I wanted to get teeth lol My DH likes that one because it's different from my usual pink-lavenders-purples

24 - two out of JKO x unkn, first year blooming, they are both one fan so I'll keep for one more year, although I don't really care for this color / look

25 - JKO x unkn, also first time blooming; saw this from a distance and thought alright yellow, easy cull decision, got closer and I like it.. especially when it recurves, in any case will keep one more year

That's 25, and I'll (try to) post the rest in a separate post.

    Thanks for looking!!

I'm going to comment on the first batch and then look at the second. On the first two you were trying for lates, is either one late? In my book anything late is a keeper, even if it's not perfect. Of the first two, I prefer the first one. Man of Sorrows x Red Friday 1 appeals to me because of the color, the watermark and the light edge. BSAT X Red Friday produced some nice babies. The first is my favorite, and I like the third one with those quilled sepals and good edge. If I were you, I would be crossing some of those siblings. My feeling is you would double your chances of getting a good toothy edge on something watermarked. All three of the Chance Encounter babies are pretty. CE does make pretty seedlings. The first of the "late" ones would be my preference. I run like crazy from anything brown. Clarifying is next to impossible.

On the second batch, my favorite is your bud king and the runner-up would be #22. High bud counts and white edges always go to the top of my like list. LOL I would definitely ditch the one that's always splotchy. The recurving is based on high temps. If you don't have high temps often, your seedlings won't recurve often. I find culling is a difficult thing. I culled six last year, and I'm culling about 10 this year. When space needs come into play, it's something that must be done.

Now let me see:, there were five that really caught my eye: I really love both the form and the colors on #7; #8 is one I like because of the color and the watermark: #10 has really a great color combination. I could find room for that one.#9a lovely red and they tend to be my favorite color in daylilies and it has a pretty water mark Of course I love orange too. and the more vibrant the better I like them. Finally, #23. It is beautiful bicolor, and it has such a delicate appearance.

and color. These are beautiful, nat4b and you should be very proud of them.

Not being a hybridizer, my comments are useless except to state my own personal preferences and what I would actually consider buying for my garden. Debra’s critique is probably more useful to you as a fellow hybridizer in meeting your goals and culling your plants! However, here are my personal “I like that look” picks. #3, 5, 8 10 in the first set. Second set: 21, 22 23

Here's the outstanding one to me: #5. Great color, form, edging and watermark. To me this tops them all, plus you say the bud count and branching is good. It is one that, if I had it, would certainly be a favorite.

#10 I like the color and also the form of the flower with all of its frills. . 14 looks like it could be good. As you noted, need a better picture.

    Overall, many are very nice.

Wow, Nat, there are so many to like!! I'm like Kate, I'm always going to pick the ones I personally like the looks of. Since I like watermarks and purple, all those ones are my favorites. I also really like light ones with dark eyes :) #5 is my number one pick - I love the look and from your comments, it sounds like it's a good plant too.

    Thanks so very much, everyone!!

Thanks Debra, of the first two neither is late, #2 is maybe ML but it doesn't open lots of buds at once so maybe that's why it still has some, it's prettier in person than the 1st one. Only 11-12-13 are late. Oh thanks for the idea of crossing BSATxRF siblings, never occurred to me. Lol about browns, I may reconsider trying to clarify it. Bud king is still blooming, and thanks for pointing out the white edge on #22, it looks so nice today, I wish it were every day ))

Thanks Kay, yeah I have a lot of watermarks. Thanks for liking #10 and 23, ha it is indeed a bicolor. #10 is so not photogenic, it's a light cool-toned pink, I have nothing of that color so maybe that's why I like it ))

Thanks Kate, I really appreciate the preference comments, and haha I don't have goals, I know not right.

Thanks Brad, #5 was really good this year.

Thanks Laura, that's how I pick too, of course I understand it just a picture, but still. #5 was so good I was thinking about giving it a name )) Hope to see your seedlings this year too!
