1972 exterior wall construction

Hello all,
Troubleshooting mice getting into my garage. My home was built in 1972, in the colonial style in the outskirts of Philly. I can see in my garage (no ceiling, open rafters) above the wall, the exterior board is some sort of brown, almost foam type of product (i.e. NOT typical plywood sheathing). I know that that's all that is there because there are a few small holes and I see the backside of my siding.
Aside from any gaps around my garage door, I see mice entry points along the base of the exterior wall. I plan to remove some drywall to have a look at what the lower portion of the wall looks like, but ahead of that, anyone have any idea if this mystery foam board is all I have? Would this have been common for my area and time period?
