I have a Scentuous, planted this Spring, but I am not in the South, and it hasn't had to tolerate much heat. However I too would like reports from others growing this rose.

I purchased this rose bare root this spring. It has been healthy, floriferous and heat tolerant for me. Also, the flowers seem to be fragrant for most of their life, and the petals fall cleanly when they die. I have been very pleased with this rose so far.

I grow mine in a large pot, and it gets about half a day of sun from mid morning to mid - late afternoon.

Rekha, I don't spray any of my plants. I imagine that I tolerate more blackspot than some people do. But Scentuous does keep its leaves well even though it has been in a rather crowded corner of my pot ghetto. It probably has lost a few leaves over the season, but not many. It has continued to flower regularly as the summer has gotten hotter, too. Of course the flowers are a bit smaller, and the color is a bit paler in the heat, but still nice.

Thanks a lot! I saw it at Lowes earlier this year and passed on it as I have a tiny space and i want to make sure what I bring home is disease resistant as I dont spray. Will try it next year!

Any retrospective comments on this rose?

Mine had beautiful flowers and lovely fragrance, but in my climate the flowers do not last very long (maybe 2 days) and are quite fragile. Many of the flowers did not open completely in the late season, but turned brown when half open. We shall see how it performs in the next season.

I would love to hear more about this intriguing rose, said to be perfumed of clove. I am sorry about the name 'Scentuous', which seems to me rather reductive. I wish they had used the German name, 'Garden Dreams,' or the one proposed in England, 'Enchantress'.

Mine ended up getting a lot of rust and mildew, I hope it grows out of that as I don't spray- hopefully it comes back stronger next year. I agree, my blooms don't last long either, but the fragrance... YUM! My plant seemed to run out of steam, I need to check its irrigation or maybe it's because the sun is lower in the sky, but it didn't have a flush a month ago when many others were going strong. Even with it not being perfect, I found it worth trying. The picture is from June.

Thank you so much, Nick. One person says that unlike most roses, it is fragrant at night. Another source says it must have full sun (which would probably rule it out for me). Some of the pictures on the web, though, especially those from Germany are truly seductive.

Update: I think one of the pictures I saw was actually of Reine Victoria, however. So there's that.

I like her. I’d say she lasts as long as an average Austin, say Golden Celebration (which I also grow). She’s not going to compete with a thicker petaled HT, but if the average Austin lasts long enough for you, you’ll probably be fine with Scentuous. I give her credit for producing decent size , petal count and quantity in my hot summer, not every variety can do that.

There is a very lush , gentle ,soft look to the bloom and the entire plant, I would say that’s her greatest asset. Fragrance is very good, but to my nose more a rose and vanilla scent., not clove. The blooms has a fine lacy ruffle detail that is uniquely beautiful.

Tantau’s own Fragrant Cloud introduced 50+ years ago is still the King, Queen and Royal Family of Clove scented roses, and for fragrance Scentuous can in no way compare to him. My friend and I each got a Scentuous when we drove up to Chamblees. A few months later she texted me that she liked this rose, but for fragrance she’s not anywhere in old Fragrant Cloud’s universe. My thought exactly. Totally different look , of course:

I didn’t receive mine until later in the summer as a 3 gallon and so my experience has been limited so far but other than being deer pruned once, it has been blooming regularly. The full ruffled blooms are attractive and the fragrance is terrific. Here are a couple of blooms from Nov 15th:

I planted Scentuous in spring but I’m in Seattle zone 8B. It’s a prolific bloomer in my garden and repeats very quickly. The plant stays compact in my 22in pot.
