Both of these are from Target and show what appeals to them. They do not want art that looks like a screensaver, but do like the photo below. They would prefer an art print rather than a photograph.

Maybe now is the time to instill in these young people of yours the idea of quality over quantity. $500 can certainly fill up the walls with things that aren’t particularly meaningful, or you could buy one or two pieces of art that they can appreciate for years, no matter what apartment wall it hangs on or what sofa it is above. Or, if filler is what they want scour the Goodwill/Salvation Army stores to find something , they are loaded right now since everyone has been home decluttering their way out of boredom.

Wall art is very personal choice, but it would need to be wider (ie landscape vs portrait) IMO. How about a series of their personal photos in matching frames, maybe with navy mats? Or another idea is one of those long IKEA shelves in black to bring over the colour of TV stand, and display some items in their colour pallet? In an apartment which may be a more temporary situation than ‘forever home’, I understand the need for not investing large sum.

If one print, would proportion be off with a 50” x 50” print such as this? Or would it need to be closer to 65” width for sofa that is 110” in length?

Specific suggestions, perhaps from online sources such as Great Big Canvas, would be a way to get them started. Given that the sectional is such a large expanse of rectangles, might you help generate arrangements for a gallery? Does subject need to have more organic lines? Perhaps even metal art similar to this?

I would look for a large horizontal piece, or set of three to be used together. But art is very personal and should reflect the owners interests and what they love. Art should not be chosen because the color matches. Art that means something is what turns their house into their home. You can help them with dimensions to use, but have THEM look at art.com, Etsy, or local art exhibits.

Thank you, cali. First, they will definitely be the ones to make the final decision(s.) Second, while I agree with you that the colors in the art do not need to be at all limited by their color scheme, they want a very “pulled together” look, and to them, that means more matching than not.

My son has asked me to share some of my art prints with them and to help them select inexpensive items to expand that until they can afford more. I’ve recently downsized, so I have more than I can use at this time.

The first piece in which he expressed interest was one of my Ansel Adams prints, and that reflects their love of nature. Many Houzzers will recognize this one of Bridal Veil Falls in Yosemite.

[Whites are very “off”in this photo of the print.] Suggestions (especially mock-ups) for adding a few small pieces to this print could make this work over their sectional/sofa. That is the focal point when one enters the apartment. If not there, then they have indicated that they will use it alone on a smaller wall in their dining area. That corner could have two or three small pieces of art for balance on the adjacent wall.

Due to CoVid restrictions, I currently have time that they do not, so I’m scrolling through the online sites. I'll share those for their feedback, and that will help us to hone in on what they like. That’s where Houzz can help.

My DIL loves holidays (and her favorite is Halloween!) She frequently changes the accent colors with throw pillows and small decor. Recently, she remarked on how much she likes a new print in my home, especially for the color it adds, so perhaps they will choose more color in the end. I know designers here on Houzz have helped me step out of my comfort zone by sharing images. I’m hoping for the same help here...there is just an extra step for approval this time.

Thank you for any images you can share for one large piece or perhaps a triptych over that 110” sectional sofa on a 16' wall. Or, for those who like gallery walls, please share a simple layout and a few prints for that same space. (My son wants to limit nail holes and he is opposed to ledges in a rented space.)

Hi Julie! 🤗🥰 Thank you, thank you, sweet and talented GF, for sharing several possibilities! I’ve sent them to my son and am waiting for feedback. I don’t yet have photos of their space to share. (He told me it’s too full of boxes to take photos!) But this image captures their look very closely. I think he will like this triptych, but I don’t know if this is what my DIL is thinking. I’m not sure they will want photography in the same room as the Ansel Adams that is essentially the same shape, size, and subject may be too similar. Maybe he can use the Ansel Adams in his study. What might you suggest in their dining area to complement these nature photos? I think those will likely be the only two walls with art, so it might help them to see what could be mixed with these. It is possible, though, that they will want something above or around their (55”?) tv/console.

I managed to find something to hit all the colors make my hunter green and brown bed from the nineties in a mid century modern room with gold colored mirrored doors that someone had painted mushroom beige look intentional for staging with what I had, lol.
