Identical satsuma mandarin trees, wildly different growth

last modified: 6 years ago

Hello forum! I’m a novice citrus grower with a mandarin head-scratcher.

I planted 2 trees as saplings six feet apart. Since planting (about 2 years ago), one has grown like a weed but not fruited, while the other has barely gotten off the ground but HAS fruited (albeit just a few marble-sized mandarins).

The only difference between them is the struggling one gets full sunlight and the tall one gets partial sunlight (in the shade of a larger tree half the day).

Could this sun differential explain their different outcomes, or is something else at play? Thanks so much!
