Design Dilemma Polls Kitchens

Hi everyone!
I would to start updating my kitchen concentrating on color of cabinets and new counters.
I would like to keep cabinets and remove backsplash but don’t want to do all white. I will eventually change appliances.
Floor stays, it is a large tile that looks like travertine.

The little cabinets across the top with the rectangle hole below them looks wrong . Remove those cabinets and open the wall to the ceiling . Swap out the cathedral doors with shaker doors since those look really dated and replace the floor .

I noticed there’s another smaller rectangular hole on the other side . It doesn’t look right . Close it up .
