My RV Decorating Question #1

last modified: 6 years ago

My recently retired DH and I just bought a 34-foot fifth wheel RV. This is a preowned 2018 model. The previous owners left curtain rods over ever window. My DH thinks adding curtains would be a nice way to add some color to the room, which is basically the living room and kitchen.

The brown leather sofa and two very comfy easy chairs stay. The floor is a wood look something. No rugs, because both sides slide in for traveling. Below is a closeup of the wallpaper on the fireplace wall: aspen trees. As this is their Alpine model, and we live in the mountains anyway, I want to stay with a mountain type look. With green as the predominant accent color.

BTW, all the windows already have privacy pull-down window shades, so curtains would just be for added color and interest. If I do go with curtains, I was thinking of perhaps creamy white semi-sheers with a soft green leaf pattern. Or soft green with a white pattern. BTW, I hate valances.

Below are pics of the room. So, what do you think?

This sofa folds out into a double bed for guests.

Oh, and there’s also one small window with a shade in the kitchen area.

My only concern with adding curtains is that they would cover part of the windows when they are open. You don't have a lot of 'wall' space push the curtains to.

Other than that, I agree with your dh... curtains would soften and make it more homey.

I agree, I’m thinking semi-sheers that would stay bunched open most of the time and not block much of the windows. BTW, I really dislike valances.

I am the opposite. I like valances in the middle and the curtains down the side. However sheers would be nice. You can have a small rug in the living area if you want one. Just roll it up and place on the couch before sliding in. You will also want one outside the front door. Not too big, A lot of campgrounds are not paved and it keeps the mud and trash out of the camper.

Hmmmm, perhaps valances by themselves in a woodsy green pattern might be the answer. A simple valance, as opposed to a more frou-frou design?

Such a nice RV! What fun!

What about pillows and throws instead? I think any fabric might be kind of overwhelming, w so many windows and little wall space?

No to curtains and creamy white with a soft green won't add color. I would go with better pillow fabrics.

If you want to add fabric to the windows and already have shades, I prefer the neat and tidy look of a faux Roman shade in an RV The tailored look in pictures appeals to me more than short curtains. It’s fun looking at pictures of the imaginative ways people have decorated them. Kind of like full size doll houses on wheels. Have fun!

I vote no on curtains. How about some patterned pillows, placemats, and maybe a throw blanket?

Lynn, not sure how you would do drapes unless you just did some. Anyway, I LOVE this fabric on JJLLHOME Etsy‘s page. Maybe pillows in this? Mixed with some solid?

I don’t think a lot of semi-sheer fabric would look all that great either. If you could install a 2-tier shade system, it might be worth it to get the light plus semi-privacy you are looking for.

I too vote for something different in pillows and placemats-napkins. Perhaps even some thin cushions for the 2 chairs at the table. A fabric more organic in pattern and more rustic than silk seems to be more fitting to the furnishings and wallpaper and overall vibe.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You've talked me into no curtains, and I’m glad. I just couldn’t find anything that didn’t busy the room up way too much. I’m going with patterned pillow covers, chair cushions for the dining chairs, and a throw, as you all suggested😊.

JCK: thanks for those fabric ideas. I agree, with all your suggestion.

JTL: I love that fabric and am off to her site in a minute. Thank you!

We have a 32' fifth wheel and I honestly love the simplicity of it. Curtains don't belong in an RV IMHO - it is camping after all. I am conscious of our RV not being another home to maintain. That being said, it belongs to you and if curtains and decorations make you happy, then go for it. RV'ing is a wonderful life, espicially now, as you can be so totally self-contained. Enjoy it - yours is certainly a lovely top of the line model.

What about green woven shade valances to cover the pull-down shades or replace the pull down shades with green textured roman shades.

Last night I must have scrolled through 500 throw pillows and pillow covers online and this is the one I fell crazy in love with (LOL)! I’m not saying I’m going to order them, just that the only one I really liked is not “mountain forest-like” at all!

I'm glad you decided on no curtains. I kind of think that pillow would be lost against your sofa and chairs. Does in come in different colorways? I think you need more contrast. When we had our RV, I didn't dress it up too much, but pillows, bedding (we had a regular mattress made for ours), etc. So I agree with pillows, a throw, etc. Maybe a pretty dish towel in the kitchen and even something colorful on your bar. I did have a pretty rug in our RV kitchen and one going into the bedroom, also one at the door. Those can add color and are something needed too.

Enjoy! We sold our rv a few years ago, but are seriously considering buying another one. So, I will be watching what you do!! (both decorating and traveling)

My fifth wheel has the fabric upholstered wood valances. They are tailored and keep the blinds from swinging from side to side when traveling. I like those. I agree with simple, not fussy.

We did change our mattress to the same one as at home.

Google your brand, year, and model of RV. You can see what style of window treatment it came with. I really can't believe it had valances on regular curtain rods originally.

It's a lovely RV, Lynn! One of the nicest I've ever seen. A valance/cornice would lift the eye up away from the darkness of the leather furniture but if you do not care for them, I get it. I'd say no to curtains.

We had a very similar 5th wheel. Have you researched what a new one of that model actually came with? That might give you a better idea of what was on those curtain rods. Ours was bought new and it did have some coverings. Mostly valances and side panels. I didn't care for the side panels but the valances were ok. I did some rugs, definitely at the door, and I would just pick them up and store on the sofa when traveling. Ours was a Forest River Sierra and had very similar colors and furniture.

    Enjoy!

For example this is a 2017 Alpine model that is similar to yours. It probably has the same type of window coverings. It is the same type that ours had. Very popular in the RVs. Unfortunately the little plastic pieces at the bottom of the window that the side panels slide onto get broken easily. Then the side panels just flop around.

This picture of the most ridiculous window treatment that I've ever seen is from ravencajun's link😄

I’ve got a window/tv/dresser set up like that in the RV’s bedroom. I can’t imagine doing a window treatment like that for it!

That's very common for RVs. My motorhome has beautiful wood cornices with matching tapestry fabric inset in the center. Those cornice and side panels stay stationary which is very important in a moving vehicle.

Some of the ones with just fabric are much worse.

Yes, They keep the blinds or shades from swinging when you travel. If they swing back and forth, they break or mess up the wall.

Ours is a 1999 model, but have the same set up.
