Nice Waterslide! Maybe........ I am no expert, but from the pics I have seen, I don’t see yellowing leaves, I don’t see that white icky webbing and don’t see the presence of sclerosia. Now is it possible that the brown spot is the beginning of a problem? I don’t know, but the rest of the plant looks good. I would probably remove the leaves and plant. My small Waterslides both developed a second eye in the second year. I will wait to see what others say.

Treat it!!!!!. It can't hurt. Moccasin used to use hydrogen peroxide to treat it. There was an article on it in Thursday's paper. I'll have to fish it out of the trash, but will report back.

edit: Sorry, it was right on top of the recycle pile. This is our local organic guy (dirtdoctor.com) who writes a weekly column in The Dallas News. He suggests spraying 1 part household strength hydrogen peroxide to 2 parts water for early blight on Tomatoes. I assume it would be the same for Southern blight on hosta. He says it works best on high humidity days.

the only way i know for sure .. and to be clear.. i never saw it in my MI ... so i claim no expertise .... was the orange balls on the soil surface of the crown ... which are long gone since you already dug it up ...

but if all you are talking about.. are those brown stains at the base of a couple petioles.. ive seen that before.. and never associated it with a problem ..

but again.. since i never dealt with this problem.. i really am not up on the literature.. nor do i read and study posts about such ...

i suppose you have nothing to lose with treating them ...

I have seen it before on some of mine too and it never developed into SB. Some damage, sure. Could become a problem. I use Actinovate drench if I see something not quite right.

oh no 🙁..I'd love to have a Waterslide..I don't have advice..to me it doesn't look like the Southern blight pics I've seen..you found it early..good luck

Debra, I was thinking the same as you---I wasn't seeing what I read about southern blight. Also, I wasn't seeing what I noticed about my Happy Dayz pictured here. It just may be that Happy Dayz was further along in the disease.

With this Happy Dayz, what I first noticed was a loose outer leaf. That made me have a closer look. There were definitely little white balls on that petiole on the right.

All I seem to recall is that last year I bought a hosta that had some rot on the bottom of one of its eyes. It was a good price and the last one. Now I can't remember what I actually did to clean it up and my "good" notes are good for nothing! The hosta was Dancing Queen. I don't see SB on it this year, but it might have rust now.

Lindalana, the product you mention Actinovate---is it this product? Sounds like you have a good system going in regards to treating possible garden problems.

Apparently I can buy it on Amazon.ca. Unfortunately, it is not available now. I don't know about the States, but a lot of gardening products are sold out here. Everyone went plant crazy! Makes me wonder what is going to happen in spring 2021 if COVID-19 continues.

I didn't know what to do, so I removed some of the leaves and then bleached the hosta. After removing two leaves from each eye, one eye looks OK and the other seems to have a hole through it. Hmmmm. . . should I remove the whole eye or just leave it now? I'm thinking just leave it and watch and see what happens. (Pictures on next post. I don't trust Houzz---the post might just disappear!)

Good new, bad news. We have hydrogen peroxide 3%! It expired Dec. 04!

Yep, this is Actinovate, very useful in gardening. Funny... Many dental offices switched to peroxide rinse for Covid prevention.

newhostalady, the Happy Dayz is Southern Blight, the Waterslide is not. I bought a $5 unnamed gorgeous Hosta at the Farmer’s Market last month that had the same thing that your Waterslide has. One by one the petioles developed a brown spot near the soil line then broke at that level. I hadn't planted it and eventually threw the pot and Hosta in the trash. Don’t know what it is, and don’t like it either. I’m distressed that whatever it is has made it to Canada. I’m sorry that Southern Blight is in your garden also.

Sorry to hear you had to throw out your new hosta from the Farmer's Market. Perhaps there were telltale signs when you purchased it?

The SB experience is my first. It is said that if you don't eliminate the fungus, it will return next year. I am wondering whether I had SB last year and didn't detect it. Good thing so far is that Happy Dayz is in a pot and not in my garden!

It is so unfortunate that there are no decent products here in Canada to use. What there is, is sold out!

My plan is to get some fungicide early in the season next year before anything disease begins!
