Oh no...wallpaper bug

Way back when Sueb was looking for wallpaper ideas for her room update, I poured over the sites that carry Wm Morris papers. I came across Golden Lily. It's been on my mind ever since...so eventually I ordered a sample. Rats! I love it! It's going to be perfect to update my room a tad. Not such a change that I have to change drapes and carpets and art and such...don't even have to repaint the walls... but just enough to add the coral accents and liven it up some....change the solid blue accent wall to this wallpaper behind my bed and get some new lighting and accessories.

So why rats? Because it means work!! DH even suggested we get a pro in to do the wallpapering!?!?! I guess he doesn't want to do the work any more than I...

Annie, mentioned that website because it carries prepasted-removable wallpaper.

That wallpaper is really lovely, fits the space so perfectly! I skipped down and didn’t read the comments but it looks like you’re going to do some spiffying up anyways, I’m sure it’s going to look fabulous. (and I miss Bronwynsmom too, she was a favorite) I’m also kind of jealous, I want to change our master bedroom, make it a bit more updated but I’m still really happy with what’s in there even though it’s about 10 years old. Stuck in an era I guess.

    Such pretty wallpaper!

Gosh, you are absolutely right: that paper is perfect for your room! For the light fixtures, if they really work well for you, you could always paint the brass (with Rub & Buff or spray paint, for example). New shades (and cord covers if you wanted) could also contribute to them looking "new". (Just a suggestion as I'm finding shopping for light fixtures overwhelming. :))

Yes tartan, I think I may have to as a quick look and I see nothing touch on like them. I was thinking I could paint the band around the shades in a coral to match the wallpaper. I want to bring that coral color as an accent throughout the room.

I also have a small area rug that's on it's way out...if I get the right carpet there, it will help reinforce the new color way.

Lukki, I hear you! I've been in this room for 10 years now and want to spruce it up, but there's so much in there that was so much work that I don't want to do it all again, especially the drapes which were a PITA to do.

I did check and it seems you can repaint touch on lamps...I was afraid the paint would make them not work any more, but apparently not.

    Love it,such a beautiful choice!

I'm also probably very biased as I have adore William Morris fabrics and have Golden Lily material in a green colorway that my mum had for years and gave to me because I loved it so much.

It is probably over 40 years old now but still in as good condition as new.

I have been wanting to use it for roman blinds in my kitchen, I'm just scared to start in case I ruin it lol!

just went and got it out of storage to take a picture, the room was not as bright as it could be.

I don’t think you will need anything over the bed if you have the wall paper.

in my opinion that wall paper is the art for that wall.

I wouldn't hang anything over the bed either. Would do bedside lamps but not necessarily wall hung. New bedding pulling out colors in the wallpaper.

It’s gorgeous. Its perfect. Go for it. Hire a pro, you can’t take the $$$ with you. Yes, replace the lamps.

The reason I like the wall hung lamps is that the end tables are different and at different heights, plus I like the lamps set high and being swing arm as it makes for easy reading in bed. I'm afraid table lamps would be too low and not adjustable. I'm a form follows function gal...

I think if I paint them, paint the trim on the shades and maybe hang them wider and lower and put on cord covers and match the wallpaper to cover, I think they'll be ok.

Hurry up and order that paper and hire that pro! Beautiful.

That is beautiful paper and I agree with hiring the pro! I recently hung a wallpaper mural in my bedroom and while it is fine...there are a few little spots that bug me. It would have been better with a pro I'm sure. Can't wait to see yours!

Paper is ordered...now I need to find a pro to hang it. Checked with a bunch of gals in the area, but no recommendations so far. I'll ask at my favorite paint store if they recommend someone.

I always liked wallpaper and several rooms in my house are wallpapered. The downside to wallpaper is compared to paint it is expensive and you cannot just change pillows or drapes for a new look -- the walls are "the look". That paper is to die for and I can't wait to see your room with it!

Love the wallpaper. I would even do the whole room in it (but then I have a thing against feature walls). You have a lot of sunlight in that room and I think it would look fab. Agree you don't need anything over the bed. That's cool that the lamps are so easy to use!

Missed you’re not doing entire room. 😢

For fun, I was playing with the image of the wallpaper with color palettes and found that, though to my eye, I see a lot of blue, the computer sees green. I came across this one: https://coolors.co/ and it was fun seeing the colors pixel by pixel.

From the colors I would select to go in the room by eye, very few of them would come out looking as the palette did.

The 3 colors on the right are the colors in my room now...so this gives me options for adding accents beyond the coral colors to include the paler and deeper greens.

Those are the same colors in my MBR Scalamadre, Shenyang linen fabric. I had our king bed made using a GP&J Baker vintage velvet in Sienna. Hung several etchings in the room with touches of coral. Walls are similar to the far left color in your room swatch. Years ago, I had a coral sofa in our LR. Loved the color as much then.

If the wallpaper is going on the bed wall, you may not need anything over the bed. You have a pretty headboard and the wall lamps cover part of it. I might try lamps or hang the wall lamps a bit further out. I can see why you would like them for reading in bed. I would definitely get rid of the tapestry (and the animals on the bed). Maybe some new bed pillows. It won't take much to update the room. The wallpaper is gorgeous!

Would you consider having the wiring run behind drywall before you put up that lovely wallpaper?

Sorry Tina, but Balboa Bunny and Potter the Otter are staying! The pillow is venetian lace I bought in Venice, the bunny a souvenir from our trip to San Diego, and the Otter is a gift from my long passed Mom. While not to everyone's taste, they are part of what make my room personal to me.

Yes mtnrd, we discussed that when we built and we discussed it again just the other day....the issue being that I would need to decide where to install them permanently, and as I'm planning on moving them from where they are now, I'm not sure I want to lose that flexibility. Besides it'd be a pain as that wall has soundproofing in it. But I'll definitely think again on it.

Thank you. Selected because it went with rug in the room, but then moved it to basement den and bought new rug... which was limited by fabric. Still not sold on the new rug after 2yrs. LOL Vicious circle. Given a do over, I would have gotten rug I loved first, then selected fabric. That said, the room is pretty though.

Your Wm. Morris pattern is my favorite of his! It will be lovely.

Zepherine, that fabric is lovely in the green colorway. I wonder if it is still available? I need to look it up as I use shades of green, aqua, blue. That would make some lovely pillow covers! I don't normally use coral, but if it's pink enough, it would work. You love it so much, you need to go for those roman shades!!

Hanging wall paper is an afternoon at most job. Especially one wall. Easy peasy. Now the work it will be to remove it in a few years now THAT'S WORK!!

    Good news! Wallpaper arrived!

Bad news! It's the wrong color!

Sorry about that, Annie. Hope it doesn't take long for the.correct paper to.arrive.

Yeah, it was my mistake...I ordered the wrong color. So I'll send this back and put in a new order for the right color.

I'm getting excited! A little more sanding and patching and we're all set. Paper hanger is coming at 8am tomorrow!

    I'm excited, too!

    She be done!

He did a great job and it sure was a darn sight easier letting him do it rather than do it myself! He even matched the switch plates so perfectly. Well done! Thank you DH!

Also I did more research and found that with a box, you can turn any lamp into a touch on/touch off, so now I can get new light fixtures by the bed to go with the new wallpaper.

Next step will be fabric and rug shopping...

    So much fun!

I'm surprised but the room actually feels a little larger! I certainly didn't expect that. I also didn't expect to love it as much as I do. Such a simple change, but it makes the room feel new.

I'm trying to pull colors from the wallpaper so I can have some ideas in mind when I go fabric shopping. Most of the colors are great and I can find close matches in the Ben Moore Affinity colors. But guess what. That coral color flower? It isn't. It's actually made up of a mix of like a terra cotta and a burgundy red that blend when you look at it. So from a distance the terra cotta and burgundy look terrible, but up close they look great. So I guess I'll just have to go seat of pants when shopping to see if I can't come up with something that works by eye rather than by actual color match.

    Somehow looks like this:

thanks to many years of removing it years ago

The secret to wallpaper is primer underneath.

When I moved into this house 20 years ago (which I bought from a relative, so I know its history), I pulled wallpaper out of two bathrooms. In the master bathroom, I had the wallpaper down literally in 15 minutes. The hall bath, however, which hadn't been primed under the wallpaper, took me days and days and days.

Beautiful, Annie. Can’t wait to see the room put back together.

I have forgotten....are you looking for new fabric for the chair and ottoman? Plus a new rug?

    Annie Deighnaugh thanked OutsidePlaying
  • 6 years ago

Thanks OutsidePlaying. No. I have wall to wall that is staying. Wall paint is staying, drapes are staying, upholstery on the chair and ottoman are staying as is the lamp by the chair. Main furniture pieces are staying

I'll be replacing the bedside lamps, maybe the overhead fixture, maybe not. I have a 5x7 area rug in the nook under the chair and may look to replace that. Then it's just accessories: fabric for throw pillows, a new side table by my chair in the nook...the current one is wobbly on carpet, and tchotchkes. If I get really ambitious, I might make a new afghan for my bed that includes all the colors.

Thanks, Annie. Thought I had missed something. Fabric for throw pillows seems like a whole lot easier than for a chair or even new bedding.

I’m sure you will find something perfect, especially with the fabric resources you have close by. You have a good eye. Good luck!
