Need decor for dining room

I recently inherited this painting from my in-laws. I’ve admired it for 20 years that they’ve had it. Contemporary decor is not my style at all but I just love this piece. I hired someone to hang it in my dining room because this is the only room this large of a painting would fit. Now I’m realizing my old decor totally clashes. My favorite styles are Z Gallerie glam elegant, I buy a lot from Kirklands too. on the wall where the painting is there was previously a large mirror. I love the 9 gold squares and want to keep those. The birds on the sides of the windows need to go and I need something for the blank wall which had something else thats more rustic looking with birds. I also need curtains. Furniture is staying as is the paint color and light fixture. I’d love some advice to finish this room to work with the style of the painting.

Many will disagree with me but I dislike the idea of true art being decor. I hate matchy matchy also. I like the piece and I love that it holds so much emotional hold for you. I think it adds real personality to your pretty dinning room. To balance the weight of the new piece find another real piece of art that seeks to you do not look for one that matches necessarily.

I think your Gorgeous painting will work just fine with your furniture, but it clashes with the 9 mirrors. That art feels like a forever piece compared to something that is trendier.

Would the mirror you took down work on either the blank wall or where the 9 mirrors are? I would do large simple pieces with a chunky frame or some black in them To harmonize with the painting background.

The art is fine. How nice to have something you love from your MIL. I think what is throwing you off is there are numerous styles in the room. It's okay to mix styles, but there needs to be a rhyme and reason.

I agree with the above poster that suggested the 9 mirror pieced need to be used elsewhere. They come off as shabby chic or country. Replace the wood end chairs at the table with the upholstered chairs. I would also switch places with the sideboard and chest. Then place the extra wood chairs on either side of the sideboard.

The art is modern, and the chandelier is contemporary. I would remove the table runner and three center/matching items from the table. Use the glass candlesticks and add a large modern ceramic bowl.... not glass, but an interesting texture and/or color - pull that little bit of yellow out of the painting and onto the table. Tie things together.

What are the tall glass items on the sideboard and chest? They seem lost, as in cannot be seen well. The pieces hanging either side of curtains are a tad high. DR art should be hung a tad lower (3" to 4" ?) since people will be viewing while sitting down.. but not so low that it looks odd to someone standing.

Hi. It is a beautiful piece.

I think the mirrors you already have could be used in another room.

I also feel the room is very top-heavy. Very dark paint and strong art on the top.

Consider painting the wall and wainscot one color. I would paint it a white or a very light tone taken from the art.

I would also fill in the wall with your new art by adding sconces to the side.

I'm not a fan of the 9 mirrors either. Since you have two "sideboards" on a similar length wall, I would look for something that could go above both in similar style/size but nothing that is so "wow" that it would compete with your painting. THAT should be the star of the room. I think your furniture is fine and if you put something above the two sideboards, I think you can not put something on each side of the window. And I would do NOTHING that would detract from your painting -- no scones, no nothing on that wall --

I honestly wouldn't overthink it. The art really stands out because the wall color is so high contrast with the wainscoting, which will draw your eye to the walls. Not necessarily a problem, but if you toned it down a bit, the room might "feel" more harmonious. But that's splitting hairs. I wouldn't take out the mirrors if you like them. But I would switch the sideboard below the mirrors with the chest (more proportional) and then possibly look at putting the sideboard under that new art. But if that's too crowded, then I would just call it a day. I also agree with putting the tan chairs at the table ends. They aren't that decorative and they stick out visually, again due to their high color contrast with the walls. The carved chairs would have a smaller footprint and are also more decorative when placed against the walls.

I love the artwork. It is a focal piece. I would remove the mirrors and small paintings on both sides of the window. Take all the stuff off the table. Then paint your top walls blue black (after midnight by Benjamin Moore). It will be so beautiful and dramatic. Put a flower arrangement on the credenza. It will pop and be so warm.

I’d love to see an after photo. Seems like you’ve got a lot of easy fixes and ideas to work with!!!

Allow that wonderful painting to stand on its own and don't feel that you must have other pieces to "go" with it. That takes away from a gallery feel and creates more of a furniture showroom vibe which is so much less interesting. I would personally want to add other pieces of meaningful art in this room, preferably original pieces. I don't mean this to sound offensive, but the mirrors are merely space fillers and against the big WOW that your painting brings to the space, they're relegated to being rather pedestrian.

You don't have to spend a fortune to collect good quality original art, and I would encourage you to start thinking in that direction rather than trying to decorate a room around a painting. Continue to layer it with pieces that you truly love and that spark something within you.

I have some pieces from Kirkland's in my home too. They ARE just space fillers. Mass produced and nothing special. They're fine for our media room, but if I had a fabulous piece of art in my dining room like you do, those "lesser" pieces wouldn't even be contenders to share the four walls.

Thank you for all your replies. To follow up with some of the comments:
The mirror I had there was nice but nothing I absolutely loved and would hang again.
The chest and sideboard are the same size. I put them in their locations because there’s a vent behind the chest that would be visible because of the sideboard having legs. The chest wall is visible from my front door and between the 2 pieces I like the chest more.
The glass pieces are apothecary jars. The currently have nothing in them. I fill them at Christmas and other holidays. I need to put them away.
I can change out the table decor.
Bird pictures on sides of window are definitely coming down. I won’t put anything else there.
I feel like the picture wall needs something else. Sconces?
The chairs....we do need all the chairs. We are a family of 7 and add in relatives at holidays and all the seating in kitchen and dining room are used. I don’t particularly like the upholstered chairs. They came with the dining room (bought off Craigslist). When we use dining room the chairs are at the table.
I agree about Kirkland’s being space filler type decor. I love that store but it’s trendy and more like disposable decor. Lasts a few years and then switch out when you get bored of it and don’t feel too bad because it wasn’t expensive.
The 9 mirrors I found and was going for this z gallerie look.

I think you have done a very nice job with the room as it is, and while I would agree that the mirrors might not be the ultimate for the room, I think it all looks nice to me. I love the color of the walls, and I think proportion wise all is well. I agree that you could add another wall piece you love, but no hurry.

Hope these suggestions help to create a cohesive and light, updated room.

    - paint room creamy white so art really pops

    - you could reupholster chairs in a deep jewel tone for impact and to tie in with art and rug

    - Suggest a more modern centrepiece in brass to compliment chandelier (remove table runner)

    - move mirrors to other sideboard vs art, which would compete

    - on other sideboard, add art and reaccessorize (both sideboards) and include a lamp on one. Find inspiration on Pinterest re accessorizing/balancing ideas

    - double width linen drapery on a longer black rod so drapes fall more onto wall than window and don’t add anything on walls
