Outdated Tile.. Help!

I just remodeled my 90’s kitchen, and the tiles need to go! We are having a tile painter come in to re-paint the green perimeter tiles. Looking for advice—- what color would go in place of the green? Going for a Spanish style look despite the modern upgrades.

Note: brown tiles will be covered with tile stickers — Spanish in black, muted white, and red pattern.

Note: walls are Chantilly Lace with a Wrought Iron accent

Do you mean the tile countertop, too? That should be the first thing to go. The grout can never be thoroughly cleaned/disinfected - it's gross just thinking about what is lurking in the grout -- and the grout will eventually crack, then you probably will eventually have to deal with water seepage around the sink. Not to mention -- it's terribly outdated. So replacing the countertop should be your first priority, then go from there regarding what to do about the backsplash.

Repainting tiles is not going to solve the problem with the cabinets being too modern for the counters and backsplash. Also as the other poster said, tile countertops are a PITA to keep clean. Have you priced out replacing the counters and backsplash? You don’t have a huge amount of space to change out, might not be too expensive and would really make a huge change.

Did you say you just remodeled your kitchen? What did you do?

THat would be my question , what exactly did you remodel ? I agree the counters and backsplash need to be done not painted.

Repainted the cabinets, not remodeled. The cabinets were an outdated oak. We spent well over our budget staining the oak, which was a botched job altogether. The painted cabinets were a last minute fix of the previous staining job.

I would love to replace the countertop, but at this point we are already way over budget. This was originally a very simple job that went south very quickly.

Is there an alternate option, other than painting the tiles or blowing them out completely?

Am I crazy for loving the counters?!

I feel like the counters, even with the green trim give off a very Spanish style feel. I know you blew your budget with the cabinets, but what about only replacing the backsplash and hood detail? That would be much more fiscally modest and might even be a DIY that you and the spouse could accomplish, plus get you a more updated look. You could do a soft green backsplash to play up the counters and make them look more intentional.

A vertical stacked tile would coordinate well with the shape of your green accent and further the cohesiveness in the space.

IMO a tiny kitchen so just wait a couple of months until you can afford to do the counter rip it all out but do the counter then patche the wall where the backsplash came out get it ready for tile and do the backsplash when can afford it. IMo paintingthe tile is a huge waste of money especailly if you have to hire someone to do it

I’d save the money from the tile painter, and just replace the backsplash and tile detail on the range hood. I think that would be cost effective, and much more durable than painted tile. Or save until you can replace the countertops and backsplash. Good luck with your project!

To tell you the truth, if you are already over budget, I don't know why you would spend more to do the counters or backsplash. I have never painted or used stickers on tiles but my inclination would be that it would be a very short term fix and you might find they don't hold up to wear and tear. And I doubt you would be happy with the way they look either and then you'd have to find a fix for that.

I would just leave them as is. I think they look great. Hopefully the color works for the rest of your house and furnishings. Sure, maybe they are not so easy to clean, but, if you use Bon Ami and some white vinegar, apply the white vinegar full strength from your own spray bottle over the Bon Ami and let it sit for 20m then scrub with a brush, that might be very effective. At some point, you will have the money to remodel and in the meantime, maybe you can save your energy and using any more of your money.

I would not waste $ painting tile. I have been going to try viny adhesive tile like this option for your trim tiles only. I like counter top ok witho green trim. I have seen on Etsy that you can get custom. https://www.amazon.com/SnazzyDecal-Stickers-Backsplash-Bathroom-Waterproof/dp/B014FJDAF8?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_4

    may help you!

I love the darker green color of the tile in the previous post. And the trim on the fan doesn't quite do it, especially when it matches the backsplash.

I love the current tiles in your kitchen, especially since they accomplish the Spanish look you want. There have been tiles in kitchens for many years all over the world and the concern over cleaning is overblown, I believe.

It's really a pretty kitchen, esp with the new look of the cabinets. Embrace it!

I too would leave it until/if you have enough funds that you feel ready to remodel fully. I fear the tile paining might become another cabinet staining experience.

Save your money and keep saving until you have enough money to do it the way you really want.

The butcher block posted above looks good with green backsplash tile. Look into that option when you are ready for new countertops. It’s budget friendly. Your cabinets came out really nice.

I think it’s cute. Some of us have fond memories of tile like that.

I really like your kitchen. I like the layout, it's compact and very efficient and open at the same time with lots of window. I like the counter look. I wouldn't choose it for a couple of functional reasons, not the look. But I could definitely live with it for awhile. I wouldn't choose that green and brown border tile, I just feel it's a little heavy and green is not my favorite color. So since you aren't me, I'm sure you like it better. [g] Perfectly livable until you get a chance to remodel. But again, I think you will be happy with your decision. Good luck! :-)

I love it. I think it has immense character, and I am a fan of tile counters. I could live happily with that kitchen for a long, long time. Please don’t cheapen it with paint or stickers. Embrace it — because it’s really unique.

Well, if you are wanting a Spanish look, you already have it. I love those old tiles. I like tile counters. I never had a problem cleaning them, as I don't prep food directly on the tile; I use cutting boards. I love Mexican Talavera tiles! To give your kitchen more of a Spanish flair, I suggest you go on ebay, search for Talavera tile, buy a bunch, attach it to plywood the size of your backsplash and screw the tiled board to the wall. Make sure the plywood (or whatever it would be actually called) is fire rated for the back of the stove. It's easily removable when it comes time to redo the whole kitchen.
