Why paint the brick if you like the way it currently looks?

No, the brick will not look the same after being painted. Brick and grout will be all same color run together. Also, paint will start flaking off after a period of time and will need to repaint. A good power washing will revive looks of current brick.

We have to tear down the brick on the garage. The brick is not made anymore so have to put up a new brick. We thought painting it would get the new and old brick to match.

Can they tear it down carefully, so it can be reused? If not, then, I would have them match the siding part and use where the brick is removed. The brick you have now is very nice. It will definitely look different than before. It will be painted brick. Grout and brick will all be the same. Here is a picture of painted brick.

Keep it simple. You want the new work to complement the old, not look like an addition.

Brick can be cleaned and reused, or just use all siding.

If you really want a gable over the garage, consider something similar to this. You don't need to use glass -- a solid flat panel, or matching siding would work, but I would repeat the design.
