Bathroom Vanity sizing help/tile

We are itching to renovate this bathroom in a 1950's house in DC. A few questions
1. What could be done with the shelving area? If we put doors on it the entry door will hit it
2. Should the vanity be flush with the current wall on the right or just upgrade it?
3. Should we re-tile like it is now and wrap from the tub area around the walls or just drywall/paint/wallpaper.
I am thinking a small-med gray/white hex tile with white subway. Unsure on fixture finishes. White vanity with white top. Any and all suggestions welcome please!
