Do you hate the grass or that there is only grass? I don't think it would look bad with some other plants. I would remove what is in the strip in the drive. It looks like it can get too large for the space.

Cacti and succulents are always good choices. And seem to be well suited to very small, even tiny gardens like yours. Here is a link to suggested firescaping plants suitable to the Bay area for additional ideas.

I would use ground cover to take up most of the space. Sedum or Geranium.
