Could you post a close-up pic of the new carpet? It's hard to see in the pic, and it almost looks like a lighter version of the kitchen floor. It'll help people advise you to see it better. Thanks!

Is the new carpet tan or light gray?

It looks like the furniture is a light tan, the counters are gray, the wall color is charcoal, cabinets espresso.

Since you have a mix of warm and cool colors I would look for a very lightly variegated slate-look tile with warm accents.

Thanks for the suggestion! I will start looking at that. It’s light gray mostly but has some tan fibers. I’ll post a better picture soon. We just moved in and mostly I’m having trouble with the kitchen colors if we don’t paint the cabinets and/or change appliances.

It’s hard to get a representative picture but it’s a very very neutral carpet. It could sort of go either way.

I’ve never tried this application, but it is inexpensive and you could buy a small amount to try…from Home Depot: Peel and Stick vinyl tiles..

before spending money on new flooring in there, have you considered upgrading your florescent lighting in the kitchen? Its going to be hard to get true colors on here since that lighting throws off everything.

At the very least, remove the light box and replace w/a track light that has LED bulbs.

as for flooring, will you be having that countertop for a long time? if so, bring in something that works with it. say, a dark charcoal tile or laminate (depending on what you want)

you can try the adhesive tile coverings, but did you know you can paint tile? If you're going to get rid of it anyway, it's a nice option to go with while deciding.

Oh wow everyone thanks for all the feedback and suggestions! I mentioned peel and stick but my husband wasn’t a huge fan. But if it’s temporary anyway, I say why not? (Now I will go check out price points ;)) ALSO had no idea you could paint tile. That’s so cool! Even if for a shorter term in case it doesn’t hold up against kids very well. I’m excited to explore these things. And oh yes, I so want the lighting changed. The led/fluorescent makes the black appliances even that much harder to keep looking clean and it’s just such a harsh cold light. Thanks again everyone!

the dark charcoal on the floor? it's either a black slate or a basalt tile. (or it could be a porcelain tile made to look like either one!)

these are all gauged, black slate tiles (Montauk slate or Brazilian black slate)

Honed basalt tile (basically, cooled lava) looks very similar, but is very smooth. (comes in different textures, but the honed is very smooth)
