You are right. I think since both hands are holding needles and yarn in knitting, that knitting is more difficult or frustrating to learn. However, in most cases, I much prefer the look of a knitted object over the crochet outcome. Knitting gives you a finer or smoother finish. But for baby blankets, I go for crocheting. It is faster and I can make cute ones if I am selective with the pattern.

I'm like shielajoyce, I like crochet for baby blankets but knitting for garments as I perfer the look of knits. Another difference is that with crochet, if you make a mistake, it is easy to undo back to the point of the mistake then pick up the yarn and carry on. With knitting it's not so easy, and if you accidentally let the needle with the knitting loops on it slip out of the loops, it can be tricky to pick them up.

That said, I like the range of patterns you can make with different knitting techniques.

I prefer knitting but do both. I like the mindlessness of crocheting afghans and dishcloths and the sturdiness of the item. But for clothing of any kind, I love the feel and the drape of knitted fabric.
