Since it's not dead it can grow back. However it's not going to look full and balanced again for a long time.

By the way an intact lace leaf maple that size can be worth thousands of dollars on the retail market. Somebody might mention that to the roofing company.

The roofing company owes you a maple. Find one you like of appropriate size and then collect the cash. Or they reduce their bill by the same $$. But don't let them do the replacing/buying themselves.

Your tree should survive. But it is never going to look good, at least not in your lifetime. If it had a significant visual presence, I would opt for removal. You get to decide if it is worth the effort to move to another, less visible location and then continue to tend what will always be an ugly duckling.

Thanks for the help. Well if it may survive we will probably transplant it to a different location and see how it looks in a few years but will also get a replacement as well. We were suppose to move it anyways for the home expansion and was not sure if it would survive the move in the end of September anyways. Time will tell. Thanks!

I had a tree removal service do that to one of mine. We had discussed them being careful around this tree before the work began and I mentioned it when the damage was done also. When it came time to pay the bill I deducted the amount of a replacement tree from the bill. They didn't like it but I was also upset. That's the only way you'll be compensated unless you take them to court.

Wait until November to dig up and move if at all possible. Or whenever the leaves have turned and dropped.
