Color Help, Please!

We purchased a house to rent out in our 55+ community and I am meeting with the painter tomorrow. The foyer and living room are painted in Behr Porpoise, a medium gray with a slight blue cast at certain times of the day. I am looking for a lighter gray color for the bedroom, office, kitchen and two bathrooms. It’s a small house and I think two colors is enough. Im using white towels in both bathrooms and a white Saarinen knock off table and four gray modern chairs in the kitchen. The office / spare bedroom will have a washed gray desk and a teal green sofa. I need a light, pretty gray to coordinate with Porpoise (loathe that name btw) that will look good with gray and white, teal and orange. The bedroom bed is a powder coated metal spindle bed in gray, and I am considering putting an orange chair in as well. All white sheets with a gray blanket and the top cover is an Eddie Bauer gray and white buffalo check quilt and shams. Some photos:

IRL it is much bluer

Yes, it’s a bluish gray, no purple undertones. The entrance and LR were painted just before the house went on the market and I like the color in the house well enough to want something to coordinate.

Some of the travel posters I have ordered from art.com below. I liked the idea of something graphic and colorful and was going to use New Yorker cover posters, but the travel ones are less expensive and anyone who comes here with a toothbrush for six months of golf is detfinitely a traveler 😎

I had the same experience as Justerrilynn with Porpoise several years ago--and I know I'm recalling correctly because I despised the name, too. Porpoise=purple for me.

But I had peculiar lighting. If it looks good from what you see on the walls, then look at the lighter versions of the Porpoise on the color strip--Behr Subtle Touch. On my monitor, it looks like a good contender.

The lighter colors are really pretty on the same chit. I would call them happy grays. Give me a minute and I’ll dig up some old photos.

You have some nice stuff picked. I really like the metal bed.

Jterrilyn, I would rather use Sherwin Williams if possible because that is the paint store in our town.

Feathers, I keep expecting the Porpoise color to veer purple each time I see it but it’s dead on blue / gray. All the trim and doors and plantation shutters are a plain bright white. So I need something with enough color to contrast with the white, but no too much. I will look at Subtle touch.

Oh ok, that will save me some time. SW Worldly Gray 7043 might work. In some lighting it can look gray with a hint of blue. It is a warm light gray other times.

BM Revere Pewter is a dead-on light grey and I am fairly certain SW can color match any BM color and vice versa.

Grey Owl is another, but it can really skew to blue or green undertones depending on the light.

Looks like I will be in the paint store tomorrow am.

    Worldly Gray. SW

    Revere Pewter BM

    Subtle Touch. Behr

    Grey Owl BM

i also liked Behr Double Click, a little darker with the same bluish cast.

We've used Revere Pewter and IMHO it has a fair amount of green in it. Lovely color tho.

    Like the rug!

I love grey owl.. i have it in my bedroom. In my space, it is an ethereal blue... a whisper of blue.. but not the least bit "nursery blue". It makes me just a little bit happier each night when i retire to my room.

i had narrowed it down to grey owl and gray cashmere .. i liked them both but grey owl had more "life".

    Nice selections!

Not sure if you have checked out fortheloveofahouse blog but she used gray owl in her kitchen. I think it looks beautiful.

Good luck! Choosing a paint color can certainly be stressful.

All your selections are great. Where did you find that stellar rug?

All of your choices are very nice. If you are at the SW store this morning take a look at Light French Gray. Most of my interior is painted that and it does not skew purple, green or blue. All I see is a light gray.

Looking forward to watching this project.

    DItto on rug!

We have SW Agreeable Gray in our "dog room" and it is a light silvery gray without any discernible undertones in my south facing space.

Thank you for all these responses! I had a thought after looking at the different colors suggested. .... what if I did the rest of the house in a slightly grayed white? Instead of trying to find a lighter gray, perhaps the contrast I need is a clean but slightly grayed white? It would make a good background for the colorful travel posters everywhere. and might look more modern. Thoughts?

This is paper white by BM. It looks like a great white with a little gray undertone.

    Another is always Decorators White.

We have Benjamin Moore Dove Wing in the main area of our house. A really nice grayed white that is a great backdrop for our art. I would call it a warmer white, so if you are looking for a cooler look it may not be for you. But it's nice.

Sas, I just looked up Dove WIng. That is a lovely color! Definitely warmer. I am always a fan of a bit warmer tone in general.

    The rug came from esalerugs.com

That site has so many rugs it was too much to look at, or even contemplate looking at. So I used the filters and selected the size (8x10), colors (gray, orange, blue), availability (in stock only) and price (under $400, only sale items). This one was my favorite, and at $259 with free shipping it was the obvious choice. I found an orange chair at a hotel liquidation warehouse about an hour away that I will get soon and that drove the color scheme. It’s a substantial club chair that came out of the Atlant Ritz Carlton.

My second choice was going to be a Ruggable, same size, with an abstract blue and gray pattern. The only issue with those is that their edges tend to curl up and I didn’t want a trip hazard. But they are washable and that’s a plus.

I represented a custom builder about 6 years ago. He painted his inters Sherwin Williams colonnade gray. Elegant and unobtrusive.

Kswl, the color you painted your main house interior living space is really nice. Make it easy on yourself?

    User thanked just_terrilynn

Thank you Jojoco, I will check that color out.

Jterrilynn, my very first impulse was to paint the rest of the house in BM Pale Oak. BUT—-it has a warmer undertone and can skew more light beige, which I don’t want.

So far my favorite color is Dove Wing, thank you Sas95 👍

The painter spent an hour with me at the house today with my samples. The winner is Subtle Touch, a Behr color he is getting in Sherwin Williams Duration flat paint.

He is going to do one or two rooms tomorrow! Decided to also do the trim.

And, found a cute modern rattan chair at Target! And a cushion in a print that will be great with the rug.

Love that chair with the cushion. So perfect with the rug. Love all your choices.

Bedrooms are painted! They started at 8:30 this morning and were almost finished with those walls when I left for lunch. The wall color is a nice, light gray but it has a tendency to pick up the color of whatever is in the room. So I’ll have to be careful about that.

I bought a low table to go under the TV in the living room, also an arc floor lamp and new ceiling fan for that room, a fiddle leaf fig for the office, and a shower curtain for the secondary bedroom.

    Modern LED light fan

Target has some very cute things, and they have baskets that would work for your faux fig

I will look online there, Mtn, thank you. We don’t have a target within an hour‘s drive but their pictures, combined with reviews, give me a reasonable expectation of what I will get from them. Not all retailers do as good a job with photos and dimensions.

It’s been a really fun project so far, and today i actually received a verbal offer to buy it already furnished! If they put the offer on paper I may do it.

You are lightening fast and make great choices. Please tell me how you get started with a room. Do you work from the bottom (rug) up? Or just have a vision and start putting it together piece by piece?

Tomorrow I have the fan coming, I think, and travel posters. I am also taking back my orange chair to swap for another one. I got this at a hotel liquidation place in central Georgia and they did not deliver the chair I picked out. The chair came from a room I. The Buckhead Ritz Carlton and I love the size, comfort and color. But the one they delivered has a weird black streak and did not have my initials on the tag. Its going to be a huge three hour round trip But has to be done, as the chair will last far beyond the other stuff I am buying and it’s an anchor of my design and color scheme. I was looking at pictures of rooms I like and am trying not to fall into the trap I see so many people succumb to, which is to equate design with shopping, iykwim.

I did choose a new color scheme for the exterior, which is on my list for February 2021. It is a creamy white called Toque White for the siding and trim, Agreeable Gray for the shingle siding and black for the shutters and front door. There is standing seam metal awning type of structure over the stoop and some windows that needs to be cleaned and painted. It wasn’t painted originally, I don’t think, but the metal has not fared so well and they’re allowing people to paint it. I would love to do a lighter gray on that bit.

    Some more great Target finds!

Decided to use both those gray washed tables in lieu of a coffee table with office sofa, I ordered two gray parsons tables to use as nightstands in the MBR. On them will be two gray ceramic lamps with orange and gray velvet shades (replacing the existing white shades). In corner of bedroom, small sized chair in orange upholstery with wood arms. Still looking for a chest of drawers, prefer lower and longer.

And have finally decided to replace counter with medium gray but do bar top on a white solid surface. Backsplash will be white penny tile. At least that is my latest plan!

Badly proportioned photoshop of gray parsons table, ceramic lamp with satin brass base and orange and gray velvet shade.

Also in MBR, MCM-ish chair and lamp and crewel pillow from West Elm

Beautiful additions to the condo. i Love your vision.

Thank you, Lyman! The chair already arrived and is going to look great with the gray and white bedroom

The wood tone is lighter IRL and the orange is clearer. The stitching is yellow, which you cannot see in the photo but is a nice detail that brightens the tufts.
