Hello,

I was looking for some insight on a kitchen and dining room design. It’s a 1950s rancher. I would like to open it up a bit more but the kitchen and dining room are split up by the basement steps. I’m not sure how to proceed with this. Would it be a bad idea to have a pony wall around the steps with counter space on either side? Possibly having a counter space stretch over the one end of the steps?

Any input would be appreciated!

The wall to the living room is load bearing and will not be removed
