Did you try Restor-a-finish?

I did... I’ve tried that and old English. The only thing that helps a little is bees wax products.
That’s why I wonder if this is a veneer of some sort. I can see wood grain through the finish tho.

Never use sandpaper, that is for removing finishes, will be a huge mistake. Get some steel wool, grade # 0000 only (don't use # 000 or lower). Take your wool and lightly go with the grain pattern with moderate pressure. Do not swirl the wool, its important to use even pressure and strokes. This will knock down light scratches and lightly dull the finish. Restore the brilliance with a good furniture polish that is preferably not silicone-based.

After using steel wool can I use rub on poly?

I’m considering using general finishes milk paint on it until the one I order arrives (in January thx to covid).
