Question About Acanthus

last modified: 6 years ago

I have a 2 year old Acanthus Mollis that stayed semi-evergreen through the winter, dropped the old leaves, then fully regenerated in the sprung and looked great. Then about 2 months ago it started dying back. Thinking it was a goner, I dug it up and potted the root/tuber to see what happened. It soon started putting on new growth. It is not fully leafed out again, but it is getting close.

Also have an 2 year old Acanthus Whitewater (variegated). It died back completely last winter. But, leafed back out in the spring and looked great. Over the course of the summer it gradually died back as well. I just left it alone and now it is putting on new growth.

Is this a normal pattern for acanthus varieties?
