Are they overwintered in the garage or inside? Hadn’t thought about permanent pot mums, but I’d love to start next year.

Hey deanna. Yes I overwinter them (I have 2 pots with different varieties) in our unheated garage. (Every couple of years I "referesh" the soil in the spring).

Has anyone ever grown the big football mums, or any of the other bigger flowered types? i was wondering if there were any hardy ones out there and I'm missing out on growing them!

Bluestone Perennials has Football Mums - they need to be disbudded and staked to produce one single big bloom. Other than that they are not much different than any other kind of mum.

Thanks Jeb, I was eyeing two or three but their prices for what’s probably just a rooted cutting in a 3.5 inch pot seem pretty steep.

I’ve tried a few mums of Minnesota varieties and would like to find a few more hardy varieties and was wondering if anyone else was growing them. Some day I might try the whole disbudding and fertilizing thing but for now I’m happy with four inch flowers and just a minimum of staking!

I too overwinter the chrysanthemums as opposed to throwing them away every year after bloom. The burgundy one is actually the red and yellow stripes from previous years (what a difference temperature makes) and has been with me for 4 years now.

Most do bloom twice a year which makes them not such a burden to carry year to year.
