Sorry for the bad photo quality.

Just checked the news and it turns out that it is called Full Blood Moon. Usually Blood Moons have a yellow or orange cast to them, but because of the smoke, it is actually blood red. It's so strange-looking.

I'm a moon-watcher, love how it changes in color. The moon is much LARGER in northern area, my Chicagoland, than when I was in CA.

The sun was red here too. We had fires going on both sides of our county. It was not dark red, but a neon cherry red turning to neon orange. The smoke and ash kept the air cooler but every day I was washing off the plants because of that ash. It was on everything and we took our shoes off because the ash was getting on our shoes. Poor plants! They have to breathe too.

It's unsettling seeing that red sun in the sky. The smoke filled sky.

Damask, it is, as Carol said, a beautiful photo of a strange and beautiful moon that is more suitable for Halloween than Oct 2. Diane

@strawchicago z5 - I love moon-watching and stargazing! It's so cool that the moon appears to be bigger in Chicago. The moon appears to be bigger when we're at the farm versus when we are in the Bay Area. Probably because there is much less light pollution there. Our neighbor has so many lights in his front yard! He has pathway lights, spotlights, glass ball lights, a wind spinner thingamajig with lights, lights the make his house change color, and on holidays there are string lights all over! He is the best neighbor ever though, and I do love his lights, they make his house look really cool, but they sure make it hard to stargaze : ). I love when there is a supermoon in the summer, especially when we are at the farm. The night is usually warm and the crickets chirp, and the moonlight turns the pathway into a ribbon of silver.

@kittymoonbeam - I hope you and your family are kept safe from the fires and smoke! It is so crazy, just as soon as the smoke had gone away and the fires were nearly extinguished, new fires started. It is very unsettling to see the red sun in the sky. And the poor plants are taking the brunt of the ash. On the bright side, I remember reading somewhere that ash is good for the soil. There's an old proverb that comforts me in difficult times like these: This shall pass too.

Thank you @rosecanadian! I wish my camera didn't make the moon look like a laser dot lol. I can never take good pictures at night. The red moon did give the night an ominous feel. But I guess it is kind of fitting for October.

Thank you @Diane Brakefield! I agree it would be more suitable for Halloween! Although on Halloween there will be another full moon, which hasn't happened across all time zones since 1944!

Wow that is red. It was yellowish here, maybe a tinge of orange. I've never seen it this

It was so strange; it turned a really deep, blood red color. I have never seen it like that before either. I wish I could've taken a better picture of it but my phone camera never takes good pictures of the moon. It always makes it look blurrier and smaller than it is in real life. I wonder if the moon will be red again tonight? There is lots of smoke in the air.

It wasn't red, here . . . But it WAS a sort of "ocher" color. From my reading, part of the red color comes from Mars, which is very close to the moon right now. I could see Mars clearly, but my camera could not.

Haha, yes I definitely have an old soul : ). I was raised on old tv shows, movies, and music and I absolutely love them! My favorite tv shows are probably I Love Lucy, The Andy Griffith Show, I Dream of Jeannie, and Full House. They're much better than the new stuff imo. : )

I was forced to watch Lawrence Welk every week. I actually liked some of it. Damask, did you watch any of the ancient western series? Some were pretty good, like "Have Gun...Will Travel, my favorite. And oh, yes, 77 Sunset Strip. Kookie, Kookie, Lend me your comb. Don't get me started. I loved the Andy Griffith Show, too, and Carol Burnett. How about The Beverly Hillbillies? A soldier of fortune, far, far from home. Ye gads and little fish hooks, how do I remember this stuff? I need to get out more. I can hear that whistling theme from Andy Griffith in my head right now. I loved Don Knotts. And Aunt Bea. And how could we forget Ron Howard, who went on to fame and fortune, for sure. Did you see American Graffiti? Howard was in it. Where were you in '62? That was the big message advertising this movie. Let's get back to roses. Diane

Haha, I have watched nearly every western tv show and movie imaginable! My dad LOVES westerns! I used to like them too, but after watching each episode of every western for about 10 times, it gets kind of sickening lol ; ). Although I still do like John Wayne movies, especially "The Searchers." I've watched every episode of Bonanza, The Virginian, The Big Valley, Daniel Boone, Death Valley Days, Gunsmoke, and a few episodes of The Wagon Train, The Rifleman, The High Chaparral, The Lone Ranger, Laramie, Have Gun...Will Travel, and I know I'm forgetting some. I have watched a few episodes of The Beverly Hillbillies too, and I haven't seen Petticoat Junction yet, although I do love Green Acres. And I LOVE The Andy Griffith Show! Don Knotts is my favorite! Sorry I know I went off on a tangent. Now back to roses. Have you seen the The Andy Griffith Show episode "Only A Rose"? It's a whole episode about roses! : ) You can watch it on Dailymotion for free.

Haha, I couldn't believe it when I found the episode! My two favorite things in one, The Andy Griffith Show and roses! ; ) It's about how there is a flower competition, the annual Garden Club contest, in Mayberry. There are different flower categories that you can enter in but the most esteemed is the rose competition. Whoever hybridizes the most beautiful rose gets to have their rose sold by this nursery and they get a picture of themselves with their rose in the catalog. Aunt Bee and Clara Edwards compete against each other every year, but Clara always wins. This year, Aunt Bee has a rose that she thinks will finally win her first place in the annual Garden Club contest, until Opie accidentally destroys it. There is a surprise ending however. I would put a link to the episode here, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to due to copyright and whatnot, but there is a website called Dailymotion (it is virus free) where you can watch it for free. Just google search "Only A Rose Andy Griffith Dailymotion" and it should come up.
