Anyone missing out on Orchids Shows?

I am really going to miss the one I usually go to in November. They always put a bright spot in me during cold and dark times. I miss the people, fragrance and being able to hold the plants myself. I am usually the first in line grabbing anything that smells good. Now it's going to be over the net. Bummer. I wish this dreadful virus would just go away(

Will you be missing out on yours?

In my area they are usually in January and February, maybe they will push them to spring and do it outdoors?

Many of the winter shows here were cancelled. So the local Society I belong to just had a Sales Table which did good business. No orchid display mainly because Judging panels could not operate and keep social distancing rules. Hopefully the Spring Show in a few weeks time will be more like the normal event.

Our show is always the first week of January. This is Florida where the Governor has opened up the entire State with few restrictions. He actually did away with mask mandates, and personal distancing.

So, our Club has the large convention center rented for our show and our Club President is asking the Club members if they are willing to attend and work the show.

In Florida our Covid numbers continue to rise.

I have always worked the Show helping with the display, selling raffles and helping judge.

I have no intention of working or attending the Show if it goes on. I realize it costs the Club a lot of money to rent the Convention Center for three days, but I truly feel most people will not attend and most members will not work the show. They are stuck with the costs of the Convention Center unless they try to fight it.

Since the Governor has opened everything, we are not sure that we have a case to get our money back.

I so look forward to our Show. But not this year. Our Club is large, we have many Vendors signed and other smaller local Clubs signed to be there.

Its sad, however, if they go ahead with it, I will not be there.

Jane, that is nuts. What's wrong with people? If they open and the Covid sporeads from there, who knows what elderly people , family would get sick and die if even? It just baffles me how so many can jhust consider it normal while thousands die.

I am happy you made the right choice. Not worth the risk. Have you seen the side effects of this flu? Not foir me. I hope you are well these days and avoiding crowds in general.

    Thanks, Mike!

I'm sad about not going to the show. We had our meeting last night via Zoom. The Club depends on so many volunteers to put together the show but many are older in the high risk group. The Board has to decide whether to pay the Convention Center the cost to rent the space for three days.

They have not received enough assurances from volunteers as to whether they will work. Right now they only have a few volunteers. Not enough to run the Show. They will wait another week to see if more people sign up.

It's sad because its a large Show and so many Vendors depend on the shows to sell their plants.

Anyway, I've decided it is not worth the risk. I think they should cancel, but am sad how so much of life has been affected by this virus. It is not the flu, it is far more dangerous.

I'll be glad to see this year come to an end!

Can't wait to hear from you. By the way, how do you do water culture of Oncidiums? I'd like to try that. It sounds like they are happy campers!

Hey buddy! So Jose bought me an Oncidium Sharry Baby last December. It was crowded in the pot it was in. It was massive to me for the price $30. The owner told me I got a great deal. I don't think he realized how big it was when I snatched it up. It had 2 massive inflos on it. They were over 2 feet tall and they had TONS of side branches and buds. The owner said it was going to be repotted. I went against the opinions of most people and decided to repot it. I stripped off as much of the media it was in and then rinsed it as much as I could. I had a vase that was the perfect size, and I used it for the orchid. I cut off all the dead and damaged roots, and I put it in the vase. I filled it with rain water up to maybe a quarter inch away from the actual pseudobulbs. It not only bloomed and thrived, but after it finished blooming about a month later, it produced more side branches off of the inflos! About 3 months later it started growing 3 more new pseudobulbs! It bloomed again, and since then I have separated one of the new pseudobulbs and I put it straight into a glass jar with about an inch of water. It's thriving now and growing new pseudobulbs. Right now the original plant has grown a huge inflo and has tons of buds. I found another pseudobulb growing off the roots that are submerged in water. I'm going to have to find a wider vase and put it into that. I think I'm going to by those decorative stones you can find in the craft section of Walmart and use those to support the plant. I'll send pics to you in your email.

Andrew, no way!! An Orchid show? They have canceled all mine from that stupid virus. Oh boy you will have fun. I am usually the first one in running to the fragrant ones getting the best.lol If you like fragrant, I have a few up my sleeve you can't go without, like one being the Zygo!! That will fill an entire room with a sweet fragrance, beautiful flowers too)) EASY to care for and grow. No special treatment and can be grown in doors with no issues. No humidity needed.

Oh yes please Mike! I would any suggestions on that. Do you have the coconut orchid? I have one. I got it from s friend in Hawaii. That's supposed to be super fragrant! I have something you might want a few cuttings of. Not an orchid. It's called oregano brujo. It's an herb that grows in Puerto Rico. I have a huge one right now. I would definetly send you cuttings of it. It's great in yellow rice. I made 24 containers of sofrito and I threw in a handful of leaves when I made it, I'm going to email you here in a few we have a lot to catch up on!
