replacing newel

I’m gearing up for a smallish remodel project with our stairs. We have traditional oak turned spindles and newel set on a rounded starter step. I want to replace them all with square craftsman-style pieces. The problem is the starter step. There are multiple spindles set into the step as they curve around to meet the turned newel.

Has anyone successfully done with without having to replace the step? I’m not sure that even a 7” newel will cover those holes, but I really don’t want to have to tear that out.

I’ve included photos (not my house) but nearly identical to what I have and want I want.
