Mirror over fireplace

We are in the middle of a redecorating our formal living room. Is this mirror an ok size? The fireplace box is 37inches and the mirror is 36inches. Please disregard the Halloween decorations. Also, a new rug and new pillows are coming in, and eventually some curtains.

I like the inspo photo, but your mirror is smaller. And you have a lot more knick-knacks. Less is more.

I think what's really throwing things are those shutters on the windows. They really don't work. I know you're getting curtains, so hopefully it will look better.

I think a fiddle leaf fig in the corner would also be nice

wish you had some other wood elements in the room to go w/the mantle. love the fireplace.

This kind of reminds of your room. I love, love these black french doors in place of the windows.

I like your tile, but I think you could bring in some more black accents.

maybe a tall plant in the corner in a black pot?

Similar room. another OP on here did a tall piece of abstract art and the plant.

honestly I think you can do better than that plain mirror. The size is ok, but it's really not reflecting anything worthwhile. A tall piece of art might look better

You see this one how it reflects back the chandelier?

or this one is similar to yours too. I like these style of vases. but again, see how the mirror reflects back the hanging light? The sconce is a nice touch too.

Plus, you have such tall ceilings, everything just stops at the mirror height.

Do you have a hanging light?

they did a small mirror here, but they also have very low ceilings.

tall plant in the corner, and black accents help tie in the black fireplace tile.

I’ll add some plants to the room! The Knick knacks are just some Halloween decorations I put up, I’ll make sure it’s much cleaner when it’s not the holidays.

I was thinking if I did artwork, it would compete too much with our new tile, am I wrong?

If you keep that mirror, lower it. Should be around 4-6” above mantel. Beth has great inputs. When you get window treatments, do white with black trims. This would enhance those windows and distract eye nicely. Is there a junction box in the ceiling? It would be great to hang a black open chandelier to reflect into the mirror.

here, added some quick things to the photo.

if you're not into scottish highland cows, here's some black/gray flower leaves

But you could easily bring in something w/color too.

just eliminating those shutters and adding some greenery jazzed it up!

Personally I think a nice wood coffee table, or leather ottomans would look good, but bring in some more black and white too

    Some additional ideas.

Ooh the cow art is nice, but I’m not sure my husband will be a fan of it. I do have a chandelier that hangs just in front of the entryway that we need to replace. Let me find a picture of it.

This is a super old photo from the listing since everyone is asleep now. But it’s just for reference.

barbie, I added a second piece of art under the cow one.

    here it is

    and w/flo's curtains

those drapes are nice too Flo.

    and a light.

Still needs a tall plant in the corner.

I like art better than the mirror though.

How cool would this look above the mantle??? This charcoal panel trim work!

And then bring in some of these elements like the pillows and the art

or, I'm kind of digging this large sunflower art. colors may not be your thing, but something w/the black background and softer tones would work in your room

similar type of room, curtains, and the little mirror. The diff here is, there is another window directly over it! This way the mirror doesn't get lost on that expanse of wall

you could always do a larger mirror

I think the mirror looks great - and it's very close to the inspiration so obviously you've thought about the look you want. I would lower it so that it relates more to the mantle.

The round mirror looks nice, I wouldn’t add another big square shape on that wall. You’ve done a good job with proportions. Love your fp tile!

Sorry, but the round mirror looks like the nose on a cartoon face. I'd rather have art above the fireplace.

Looks great, but the mirror needs to be lowered. Right now they don't relate visually enough.

I’ll drop it down a few inches and see if it looks better. Is it a bad idea if I go with a bigger mirror?

What about 42? Or an arched mirror?

I would not go bigger or higher. In my opinion, you are maxing it out right now. My thought is if you go larger, you will upset the balance and proportions of the fireplace. Don't worry about trying to "fill the space" above the fireplace/2-story ceilings.

How about this rug and coffee table?

So I dropped it down to 6inches above the mantle. Please excuse the messiness, we’ve got a 5 year old and 2 year old so we can only work on things after they are asleep.

Where are some good but budget friendly places to buy curtains? I can’t sew, so please do suggest that.

And I think I’ll look into changing out our shutters. We need coverage because you can see our shed and AC units if we keep it open.
