How to paint this 1925 fireplace..

Hi everyone - we are doing a full house renovation on a 1925 Spanish and would love your input on painting this fireplace. Currently it is this orange color (it is more orange in person then it showing in the photographs) we are going more contemporary in paint but keeping the character of the wood floors and fixtures etc but I would love to paint the fireplace white however I do not want it to be sterile white which I am afraid might happen if we just paint it with the white wall color.

What I do like about the fireplace paint is the different dimensions in the color but have no idea what to search for or how to do this using white - do I just use two different whites and a sponge ??? (as you can tell no idea LOL)

This is an inspirational look for the feel of the home (but with more warmth in rugs and furniture but the contemporary feel of all white) but this fireplace is also painted white but has the wood mantle to warm it up ..

It has been previously painted? or it that the natural stone?

A good choice in a warm wall color can actually tone down the golden aspect of the stone.

The tile hearth is a lovely original, and consistent with the style of the house features.

Take care that your contemporary touches do mesh well with the 1925 Spanish soul of the house - it can be done, but requires thoughtfulness, other wise it will always feel a bit "wrong".

I do think it will require 2 or better 3 different shades, and I think the use of glazes along with the base paint. Google "creating a faux stone look" might bring up the technique for replicating the lovely multicolor aspect.

It has been painted and is starting to chip/peel and does have a crack that we will carefully repair.

Thank you for your help - I will go google now - any recommendations for shades (should they be different shades of white or incorporate others?)

should they be different shades of white or incorporate others?

If I were doing it, I would be inclined to bring in small touches of warm gray or bronze to create more depth - but it that would depend really on what you are doing with your other painting. Warm tones regardless, to not fight with the tile hearth.

Whites come in such a range of tones, including extremely subtle blues, pinks, greens, grays, tans etc; and some labeled "white" are really pretty obviously a color (like many versions of "Navajo White" which actually might be a color to look at - it is different in every paint manufacturer's catalog) that just using different shades of white might give your desired effect.

Do you have an inspiration picture of a painted stone fireplace to go by?.
