Rose sporting different shape?

My Windermere rose recently put out the strangest bloom—for her. I’m posting a photo of a normal Windermere bloom and the unusual one, to show how different it is. Usually her petals are very rounded, and the bloom is full and cupped. I’m used to her turning apricot shades in cooler weather, but this new bloom changed its shape! It’s almost a waterlily form. Resembles Perle d’Or more than Windermere.

I’d love to know if this is some sort of nutrient deficiency, or a bud defect, or if this could be an actual sport. I kinda like it, and I’d love to replicate it, as Windermere is a favorite in my garden.

I suspect it's not a stable sport, but you can tag that cane, and see if it does it again.

If you've had any unusual weather in the last 6 or 8 weeks that is probably what affected it. Weather during growth and formation of buds has a lot more to do with changes than nutrients would. If it was a nutrient problem the plant would probably just not produce buds at all. As Jeri said, mark the cane and see how it blooms next time. IF it does repeat that form you can try and take cuttings and root it. It is a pretty form. Looks like a dahlia to me!

Jeri and sei, that’s what I suspected. Quite sad. I like it. :) I shall tag the cane and perhaps we shall see.

Kristine, the baby is doing wonderfully! She’s almost crawling, and is such a joyful little bug. We love her to bits. Thanks :)

Oh, she's got PERSONALITY in spades!!! And how adorable she is!! I love the leaf one too! Light blue looks wonderful on her...so stinkin' cute!!!! :)
