Where should I embroider my pattern?

So I want to hand embroider mountains on a shirt. But I don't know if I should put it on a pocket of the shirt or above the pocket (like it's coming from the pocket). Which position would be the best for beginner like me??

I would say the pocket, but if the shirt is already made, then you'll probably be frustrated with the space limitations of a pre-existing pocket.

If you're going through the pocket AND the shirt fabric, that's 2 levels of fabric.

I don't know how detailed your project is, but when I do something that will be more than one level of fabric, I do it separately, then sew the final project onto the shirt/jacket etc..

I find that 2 levels of fabric will slip/slide around and be frustrating to keep tight (if you know what I mean!)
