Particle board subfloor

Hi all: I am renovating a room over a garage. The subfloor consists of two layers of particle board. I plan to carpet the area. Should the subfloor be removed and replaced with plywood subfloor instead? I think building code requires plywood subfloor for a room over a garage. Advice?

I recommend you either remove and replace it with plywood, or you install the plywood on top of it. Here is a useful discussion about the few pros and mainly the cons of particle board underlayment: Particle Board

@kudzu9 What plywood thickness do you recommend if I applied it over the particle board?

@millworkman It's definitely particle board. Both layers are stamped Floor underlayment, NPA, Type 1-B-1, mill 44, TEMPLE, Thomson, Georgia. The bottom layer can be viewed from underneath in the garage.

For installing on top of the particle board, a good quality 1/4" plywood should be fine presuming the existing particle board is rigid enough so that you don't have notable deflection when walked on.
