Need ideas for my dining room

I asked for advice in the past, and the majority of people who responded told me to get rid of a couple of my hutches. These were all gifted to me from great grandparents and grandparents. I have found another place in my house for the larger hutch on the back wall. Now I need advice how to rearrange the room. I need to mention that the China cabinet in the corner is a corner piece. I also want to get a new light and picture. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

Will corner hutch fit into corner where doggie is standing? If yes, try moving it there & move the curved front hutch to be centered in the space the large one was. Both of them are too tight fitting where they are now & they break up what should be a free hang drape that each one has next to it now. If the corner hutch fits the other corner, each piece will not crowd their new space & should open up the room. Your wine oval is not going back up I hope. it’s cute but looks like a casual dining art piece. If you’re getting both a new chandelier & new art over buffet, I’d get the light first as it will have huge impact on “flavor” of your dining room . Either way, maybe the 2 lamps on buffet could find new homes? Looks a bit cluttered & unnecessary with all the light in room. Maybe the chair in front of window could go into corner hutch’s current space?

If I understand correctly, the hutch on the back wall with the wine sign above is gone, right?

How about moving the corner cabinet up to the front left corner and move the cabinet currently in the that space to the back wall where the larger hutch was. That way neither are encroaching on the curtains and it gives the room a little more breathing room.

Ha, ha...I think KW and I were writing the same thing at the same time.

I think your suggestion will work! I’ve never really liked the oval wine art and I totally agree getting rid of the lamps. I’m super excited but now I have to convince my husband where I want to put the hutch. There is an alcove or inset across from our bathroom downstairs that it will fit perfectly in. It’s actually down a hallway that leads into our family room. Do you think I could keep all of the existing China etc. still in it if I move it there?

If moved to the hallway, I would try to use it as more of a display case than a china cabinet.

Yea you’re probably right. Maybe somehow get some lighting in it. Maybe display books, pictures, plants, etc.

First, I hope you have hard floor surface furniture moving pads & if you don’t then do get some! Will go a long ways towards generating enthusiasm for moving big pieces. To your cabinet contents question - Well, since you will need to completely unload all three cabinets anyway, it’s a great time to rearrange what looks like some nice collections of at least vintage pieces of crystal & porcelain. I envy you that fun job! Really! Since I can’t see your pieces or your hallway lighting , my first thought is to fill that cabinet with non-dish items. That Is,figurines, vases, maybe a serving set etc. You might even want to display photos of the family who gave you that piece - old photos in vintage look frames. Maybe use some of the cupboard storage for bathroom related items if that hallway bathroom is short on space. Otherwise fill bottom with least used dining room dishes.

Lighting isn't necessary. I just meant not to use it for dishes.

laff049 I had a question about the window treatments. I see you don’t have window trim, are your Roman shades inside or outside mount? Cordless or with cord? Most pictures have trim but mine don’t and I want to do something similar to yours. Thanks!

Yes, I don’t have trim around my windows but wish I did. They are inside mounted with a cords.

Great ideas for how to display the hutch. I was given a lot of antique pieces which I would love to display all of it but would be overkill! I have lots of vintage photos as well thanks so much for your suggestions!

Please show us the after pictures :)

Editing your belongings is personal. You may be able to move one or two hutches to other rooms to use as bookcases. Your rug is luxuriously large and your furniture is lovely, but there is a bit too much of it. Yes, you have lots of space, but
your things will look better if you reduce the number of pieces on display. You can always rotate your things seasonally or even every two months.

Well after everyone’s awesome ideas, the corner curio is not going to fit in the suggested corner. I’m bummed about it. I think I’m back to square one, so for now I’m going to look for a new painting and light fixture and get rid of the lamps. I have looked all throughout my house looking for other places to put the cabinets but there isn’t any room.

Rug, chandelier, lamps, and chairs are the problem. Too busy. Can you submit an updated pic revealing your room without the back wall cabinet and wine advertisement?

For now, the back hutch is staying.

You said you found another place in your house for the back hutch. That is what i am referring to.

I did find a spot but I’m not sure how I would place the other cabinets which I’m keeping in my room. The corner curio either has to stay where it is or move it to the opposite corner. I was thinking of keeping the buffet where it is and then moving the lion’s head hutch where the back hutch is. Would it looked balanced?

If you are saying you now need to keep all 4 hutches in the dining room and the corner hutch doesn’t fit in the corner where your doggie is, the how about this: move the buffet under the window, the move the display cabinet to the wall where the bigger hutch is (close to corner, to balance the other corner hutch that’s staying where it is. Both are rounded and sort of same height, I think. The finally move the big hutch to where the buffet was. Change light fixture as you wanted, and move your spare chair into corner where the doggie is. You will have a space on the wall where big hutch was, between window and display cabinet which will now be close to corner, so you can maybe find a vertical piece of art for there?

Or, does the top part of the big hutch come off into 2 separate parts? Maybe you can do that and put just that bottom part in front of window? And leave the buffet where it is, and do as mentioned above with the display cabinet? Your plant and a piece of artwork would fill in the space next to narrower window.

The top part of hutch doesn’t come off. I like your suggestion of putting the buffet in front of the window.

I’m not sure about that - measure the height & width of buffet before moving it! It looks taller & wider than window & drapes will be lost behind it. Your primary issue is too much furniture in the room isn‘t it? That’s the problem you presented so I would still move the cabinet to the hallway niche out of the room because that does give your dining room the space you want. With that cabinet out, try putting the corner cabinet in that corner space to right of window & set chair in space between it & smaller window. For curved front cabinet, maybe it could be angled just a bit to get little bit of space between it & drape - cabinet doesn’t have to be straight against the window wall. The result is a clear wall for the buffet & new art to shine & you don’t have furniture in every corner of the room!

Another thought - looks like your entry door is around corner from where doggie is. With arrangement I suggested, when entering your home, the view will be lovely new chandelier, table, buffet & art!

I measured the area in front of the window and it doesn’t work. Yes, I was trying to eliminate at least one piece and I did find a home for the larger hutch. I like your idea of having just the buffet on that wall and angle the other cabinet. Thanks!

I’m thinking maybe an abstract painting. Should it be the same width as the buffet?

Sorry everyone for being so indecisive and wish washy about this. At first my husband was on board with moving the hutch but now he thinks a hutch should be in a dining room. I wish he would go away for a day so I can move it! 😜

Get those furniture sliders & you will be able to move it almost by yourself.. We’re all spending too much time in our homes these days so what else do we do but move furniture! It’s fun to repurpose things & be creative with arrangements. Try putting this plan on paper with all of the measurements for the pieces & the space you want to move pieces to. Tape out the space of footprint of cabinet that can move to hallway. That will give you a better feel for how it will work there. Show that to your DH & he may “see” your vision & get back on board. Change is hard for some☺️

Get your new light fixture before even thinking of art. Need all pieces in place before thinking about size & subject. Art is personal - you should hang what makes you feel good but off hand I’d say abstract doesn’t seem to match or fit your style based on what I see of furniture & the value you place on “old” family heirlooms. I’d be looking at some restful landscape maybe. Can’t tell what subject of picture you have there is - looks Tuscan like. Maybe you won’t need new art once you move the lamps?

Have you thought of showing us other rooms in your home? We might find better places for things if we knew what some other rooms you have looked like.
