breakfast nook challenge

last modified: 6 years ago

Would you treat the breakfast room as an extension of the kitchen and use same cabinets on the wall? We need a little more storage so my original thought was to do glass wall cabinets and base cabinets to match the kitchen. Kitchen cabinets are planned to be kraftmaid lagoon ( it’s ok if you don’t like this color cabinet 😊).

Post an actul to scale floor plan not the lighting plan and also some idea of what the cabinets look like and what kind of storage you need. Did you have an actual KD not a cabinets sales person anf not your architect that is where the storage issue needed to be addressed.

Yes. But you could also take the opportunity to do coordinating cabinets vs. matching cabinets. In other words, if the cabinets in the kitchen are natural wood, for example, maybe you do a set of painted cabinets in the breakfast area with the same door style.

The cabinets are tough to get a picture of because Kraftmaid has a horrible website. I am attaching a photo from their webisite of the color and the door style I will most likely go with. All one color wall and base in the kitchen (lagoon). Unfortunately we are working on a budget and while I have champagne tastes, I need to compromise LOL. I do not have a kitchen designer per se however, I do have an interior designer who helped me with paint colors so I can reach out to her if I need to. Plus I have a few friends who were kitchen designers (and have an interior design degree) so I can ask them as well when I get there. Right now my question is if I am using these blue cabinets in the kitchen should I be using the blue in the nook? Like I said I am thinking glass cabinets on top which would hold my special pieces of glassware and plates etc.. The base cabinets would be for entertaining dishes, plates, bowls things like that. My fiancee loves to cook and he has every appliance and gadget so we needed more space than the kitchen offered.

Yes. You could do the skinny depth cabinets, coffee bar, freestanding buffet etc.

Adding cabinets to a space that was not planned to have cabinets may have undesirable consequences to the design of the space/house. It appears ceiling design and window size and/or location may be effected by this late in the game design decision. It is certainly not ideal to store kitchen gadgetry in a dining space, even if they are behind doors.

Do you plan to park four cars in you 4-Car Garage?

Will the house be built in an area where it may snow?

On average how many people do you want to be seated at the nook table?

What is the maximum number of people you want to be seated at the nook table?

    HI Mark,

The space was actually enlarged to include cabinets. We are custom building and the original space could not fit wall cabinets and we had it added. The house is in FL so snow is not an issue :) The "window" you see in the living room and side of the breakfast nook actually retracts (for lack of a better word) to allow the whole space to be open to the outside. My plan is to store all the gadgets etc in the kitchen and enlarged pantry and to use the storage for the entertaining items that we typically don't use on a daily basis. As for how many seats... could be 4 our could be 6 depending on how the table fits. We don't intend to have 6 people on a daily basis either as this is our retirement home :) 4 car garage is not my domain. I know it will need to fit my truck and his golf cart and all of his man tools.

I would give very careful thought to what you will store in the cabinets. Before I would go with “built in” cabinetry in your space, I would consider something unexpected but useful. A Welsh cupboard, an antique sideboard. Something in which you can display dishes, glassware, silverware, etc. will be used in the space.

Does the plan you posted show the space that was actually enlarged to include cabinets and show the cabinets?.

Are yo concerned about it looking like a garage with a house attached to it?

Are you ok with a kitchen where you'll need to constantly turn the lights on because there's no natural light?

Do you have kids? If you do, are you ok with how they're going to walk through the work zone of your kitchen to get to their bedrooms?

Is someone going to be sleeping in bedroom 2 all the time? I ask because then if someone in bedroom 3 flushes, it will most likely wake the person in bedroom 2.

After people shower in the pool bath, will they be walking through bedroom 2 to get to the rest of the house?

Are you ok with walking through half the house carrying laundry?

Which direction does the front of the house face?

Omg! I simply asked for assistance about a breakfast nook! Yes I’m am very happy with the layout of the house! We interviewed several builders and walked through more homes than I care to say before choosing. Most of the houses we looked at in the area have very similar floor plans. Am I ok carrying laundry through the home? Have you ever seen a house in the northeast???? Bedrooms are on the 2nd floor and laundry rooms/mud rooms are where you enter through the garage. How do you think the laundry gets there ? The laundry fairy ??? Will the person I’m bedroom 2 hear a toilet flush ? Is this a real question? I grew up with 6 people in a 1000sf row home. We all shared one bathroom and lived to tell about it. I’m not sure where you got the idea there’s no natural light since the entire back of the house is all windows and maybe you didn’t actually read the part that says retired and no kids. All this because I asked about cabinets In a breakfast nook 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Hi Mark.. unless I posted the first plan, which I doubt, this one is the larger breakfast area. I believe it’s about 2 ft wider.

I would use a coordinating color for the cabinets in the dining area, as Sabrina Alfin suggested. The color would depend on what you choose for the rest of the room. Do you already have any furniture for the dining room? Table/chairs/rug? You can use the palette from the kitchen, but in different proportions. For example, if the kitchen is mostly blue with accents of green, then use a larger proportion of green in the dining room with accents of blue and perhaps, say, yellow. It's important to consider flow and adjacent rooms when selecting colors.

Neither of the plans you posted show cabinets in the nook. Once you see the cabinets shown on the plan you may be able to visualize how it effects the design of the space, such as the window ceiling decoration placement.

Once an entire floor plan is posted it opens up comments about other parts of the design. Some people, seeing what they feel as potential improvements, share those thoughts. They are most always made with the best intentions for the benefit of the original poster. A lot of times it is good advice worth contemplating.

IMO if you actully posted a to scale plan without all the stuff confusing the issue we would have known there is a wall of windows and any time you go on this site to ask a quaestion you will get more than you asked for. That is what we pros do. IMO there is almost always room fro improvement in a stock plan As for the question yes you could but IMO an actual cabinet would look better and why was storage not a big part of the kitchen design with your KD IMO that walk in pantry ? is a huge waste of space and a long walk from the work area.

Thanks all! I think I will do best handling things on my own for now and utilizing my network of designers. Appreciate the insight. And as far as the pantry, that was planned. I wanted a huge pantry right next to my kitchen.

    Thanks!

Patricia.. I actually appreciate the advice you have offered and you were one of the reasons I changed the cabinets to one color as opposed to two. I have no problem with advice being given in a constructive way and I love what Diana had to say. Flo answered a question I had about a paint color which was a tremendous help as well. My issue was the ridiculous comments about hearing toilet flushing at 2am and walking 50 steps to my laundry room. I'm sorry but that response had nothing to do with what I was asking nor were any of the comments relevant. I'm simply trying to get ideas and hopefully some assistance thinking outside the box and outside my comfort level. I've never built a home from the ground up where I had to make every single choice. This isn't a production home where you get 5 things to pick from so yes, it's a bit overwhelming and I do tend to change my mind from time to time. Opinions from others can be very helpful. Again, I appreciate all the positive help I've received. Thanks again.

Actually....I like your floor plan a lot! It looks like a wonderful retirement home. Lucky you!

Appreciate it @ptreckel :) We looked at many many homes and met with several builders and this felt like home. We were able to secure a larger lot so we have plenty of space inside and out for just the 2 of us (and guests when they visit). I also appreciated your comment and began looking for a special side piece as opposed to wall cabinets.

Where did the plan go? IMO there's nothing wrong with matching cabinet colors/etc but for another area I'd paint a different color. Kind of like doing painted cabinets with stained island, I really like contrasting areas to make it pop
